Things You Didn't Realize You Missed About School

"My classes? I could never miss my classes," you once said.

Things You Didn't Realize You Missed About School
Jordan Sickon

You’ve read all of the “Things You Miss About [Campus Name]” lists, reminisced on your previous year away at school, and prepared yourself to come back, but you may have forgotten some of the little things that make your time at school so enjoyable.

1. The shameless realization that you haven’t left your room in three days.

Or, maybe for someone normal, only one day. Regardless, this isn’t considered out of the ordinary when you're at school, everyone has done it one time or another. Whether you’ve spent all of the time studying or watching Netflix, someone down the hall is probably in the same boat as you.

2. Your favorite meal in the dining hall, even though it is super gross.

Okay, it’s still kind of good, or else you wouldn’t like it so much. Sometimes its been sitting out for a few hours, or the portion is smaller than the last time it was featured in the dining hall, but you power through, you don’t back down. This might be what you’ve been looking forward to all week, as sad as that sounds, so you’re going to make sure you savor every bite.

3. Turning in your essay one minute before it’s due.

As much as you hate the stress that comes with overwhelming class work and late nights, what you’re doing at school gives you a sense of purpose. That really hard essay for that really hard class makes you feel accomplished, and it pushes you to strive for something when all else fails.

4. Going to a coffee shop to get stuff done and feeling so grown up about it.

Or, heck, lets take it a step further: Going to a coffee shop for a meeting and feeling so grown up about it.The decision to get some work done in a new environment can either end nicely or horribly, depending on your attention span and the people you’re surrounded with that day. Sometimes, though, even the feeling of going somewhere professional to get important things done makes you feel more grown up than you really are.

5. The squirrels.

I probably didn’t have to tell you that you missed these little critters, you already knew, but I couldn’t go through this list without mentioning them. I guess the way your day brightens after seeing their little bushy tails speed across the botanical gardens can slip your mind at times.

6. That one kid at the football games who always tries and fails to start a chant.

As horrible as it may seem, this is always very amusing. Not only the fact that no one ever, and I mean ever, joins in on his or her “BLEED GREEN BLEED WHITE” chant, but the fact that this person is never phased by it. It is quite admirable, to say the least.

7. Walks to class.

Okay, sometimes this one is the absolute worst, but you also miss it. Especially when the seasons change, or when you walk all the way to class just to find out that its canceled (I understand many people will disagree with me on this one, I’ve prepared myself). Plus, it’s a great way to get daily exercise, which makes up for those lazy days we discussed, remember? When you don't leave your room? Yeah, those days.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
