Okay, we have all been here. Your friend is crying because she is poor (who isn't these days), because her fling cheated on her with another girl in her bio class, because she doesn't know how to work the laundry machines, because she got sent to standards, or maybe even because her hook-up wants to take things to the next level and that terrifies her. Fortunately, you've been in her perfectly shattered glass slippers a time or two before. Unfortunately, you know exactly what to tell her... and you know she won't listen to a single word you have to say.
First thing first, girls are stubborn little creatures. I mean, take my word for it. No really, take my word. We think we are always right and that we always know what to do but the truth is, we are scared. We are stupid. We make mistakes. One good thing that comes from mistakes is usually a lesson learned. Some of us have made these same mistakes and are only trying to help. LISTEN TO US. People always say that mother knows best, but sometimes... your pledge sister knows best.
In the two short years that I have been on my college campus, I have learned a few things. I have learned that cash is always a good thing to carry. I have learned that you really cannot ace a test the way that you could in high school. I have learned that the world pushes you down and also pulls you right back up, eventually. I have also learned how to try to talk a sister off the ledge and I have learned that she usually ends up right back in the same spot a couple weeks down the line.
Through everything, we love our friends, but here are some things that we all wish they would really just take our word for:
1) STOP TALKING TO THAT BOY: He has made you laugh, made you cry, and has even shown you something in yourself that you may have never noticed before. I'm sorry to say this, but it's been an entire semester and you have been strung along. That boy is not going to love you back. Walk away while you still can, while you still have a strong support system, and before you annoy the girls who keep telling you that he is no good. They have probably had their heart stomped on by a boy who was one in the same as this one and they know that the outcome really is just pain and sadness. He has given up on you and now it is time for you to do the same. Really... delete his number. Do it. Now.
2) For the love of all things good in this world, don't take that extra shot. You and I both know that you do not need it and that we are still going to have an amazing time tonight without getting sloppy. I will literally buy you some food tonight if you just put the shot down. Okay, good. Now just slowly step away from the shot.
3) Yes, it is college. Yes, you want to have fun. Don't we all? That doesn't really give you an excuse to hook up with everyone in sight. Put yourself to a higher standard and the guys around you will start to. Trust me, we've all had to realize that we deserve better. It's hard but once you realize this, everything starts to get a lot easier. Yes, boys will still talk to you and think you are awesome, because YOU ARE.
4) You can't see yourself the way that I do. You judge yourself too hard and you are way too hard on yourself. You are hilarious. You are beautiful. You are strong and sexy and smart. You are flirty and thriving. Stop putting yourself down. Start looking in the mirror and seeing you for who you truly are.
5) Stop saying you are going to go to the gym and just go. I will go with you. Trust me, we won't die from it.
6) Stop skipping class. I mean, it sucks. I hate going too, but I go. Just go and make a day out of it. I'll buy you a starbs if you go to your classes.
7) Yes, your mom is a bit crazy at times. But, she pays for you to go to school and she just wants the best for you. Start listening to her more. She probably knows a lot more than you think she does. I know she is cheesy and thinks she is a college freshman when she comes into town, but she just wants you to think she is cool. Send some positive vibes her way.
8) You're being dumb. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but stop overreacting.
9) Even though you drive me crazy, I love you and I would do anything for you.
So friends, let's keep into account that when someone gives you advice, they probably know what they are talking about. Listen to them no matter how hard it is to hear. When another sister needs some advice, tell her to listen to you and help her through it. Tell her when she is being crazy or when she needs to stick up for herself. Tell her something. I mean, we are women so we are always right.
