Now that I am in college, I often find myself thinking about my time in high school. Although those years are full of fun memories, there are some things that I wish I could go back and change. Take advantage of your time before college.
1. Taken advantage of how much easier high school was
After being in college for over two years, I definitely miss having easy classes. For some reason, in high school, school came so easy to me. Now that I am in college I actually have to study every single night, and that is something I was not used to. I wish I had taken more advantage of how easy high school was compared to OU. Now that I know I can make a 4.0 in college, I wish I had tried a little harder because I could have clearly made more 4.0s in high school than I did.
2. Learned how to eat healthy
In high school, I never even knew calories were a thing. I was always so active, and anything I ate I burned off in workouts. I have always known soda was bad, but I never realized how bad it was for you until college. Throughout high school, I didn’t ever learn how important it was to eat healthy. Looking back on how bad I ate and how much I worked out, if I would have eaten at least halfway decently, I probably would have had some nice abs. Eating healthy in college is so hard, especially if you’re not used to it. High school is perfect time to get into the routine of eating right, so when you get to college you won't pack on the pounds.
3. Cooked more with Mom
Not being able to cook anything other than three meals is starting to get old. I really wish I had spent more time in the kitchen with my mom, learning from her. Being away from home for months at a time really makes me crave home-cooked meals. Thankfully, I learned the basics of cooking and baking, but learning how to use a crockpot and a grill would have come in handy.
4. Did more farm work with Dad
Quality time with Dad was always fun, and still is. I always thought I was such a city girl, until I actually moved to the city. Going weeks without seeing livestock makes me feel so out of place. I knew I would miss the farm, but I didn’t think I would miss it as much as I do. There are nights that I wish I could go out to my backyard and watch the stars without a single city light for miles. As odd as it sounds, hard labor on the farm was fun and it actually taught me a lot of lessons.
5. Spent more time with my grandparents
Family time has always been the most important thing to me, only coming home for the holidays makes me so homesick for my grandparents. Living in the same town as every single one of my grandparents was something I took for granted. As my grandparents get older, I realize more and more each day how important they are in my life. I am realizing that the time I had in high school and living in the same town as them was precious, and I should have taken more advantage of that.
6. Spent more time with friends.
Sometimes in high school I would have rather watched TV or slept after longs days of school and practice, rather than go over to a friend's house. I should have spent more time with my friends. Don’t get me wrong, I spent a lot of time with them, but there were girls nights that I missed out on that I regret because I was busy doing something else or sleeping. In high school, I wish my friends and I would have gone to more places and done more activities. The town I grew up in was so small, and there was almost nothing to do, but I wish we had taken more spontaneous trips to the city.
7. Taken advantage of free time
I would seriously pay for free time. My schedule has been so crazy that I am lucky if I get to have more than one meal a day. I basically live off of coffee, and Sundays are the only days that I don’t have more than five things to do. Even then I still have things that need to be done. I miss being able to get home from school or cheer practice and just hang out. Now, I probably haven’t gotten home from school and “hung out” literally since high school.
