If you're like me and never have been a fan of going outside to play in the snow on a snow day, here are some ways you can still make the most of your day off without coming in contact with the snow.
1. Knitting/Crocheting
Ok, I know this makes me sound like an old lady, but I recently took up crocheting again and it’s one of the most relaxing things ever (when you finally master the correct technique). Picture this: The snow is falling and you’re sitting inside on the rocking chair in front of the fireplace crocheting your best friend a blanket that you just decided will be a scarf instead because you’re going back to college next week and a blanket would just take too long.
2. Binge watch a new show
This one is obviously a given. There’s nothing more relaxing than staring at a screen for 12 plus hours, only moving from the position you’ve been glued to for the necessary bathroom and snack breaks. It’s a great way to take a break from all the nonsense in your life and live vicariously through someone else’s adventures for a little bit. “Are you still watching?” the screen will say after the 15th episode in a row, and in reply, you will scoff right at the screen and exclaim, “Momma didn’t raise a quitter!” until you reach the end of the season.
3. Make a Playlist for your friend
I personally like using Spotify for all my music and playlist needs because it constantly gives you suggested songs based on what you’ve listened to previously, but there are many other apps out there to make playlists on. The easiest way I always find new songs for playlists is looking up the soundtracks for some of the movies and tv shows I recently watched. If you and/or your friend liked the movie or show, it turns out they might like to listen to some of the songs that came along with them too.
4. Read a good novel
Ask your friends for some suggestions or even a good book that you can borrow from them on the given day. You might want to look for something light and on the shorter side that you know you’ll be able to finish on the snow day, that won’t distract you on the days to come when you have to return back to reality.
5. Winter Cleaning?
This one takes more effort than staying in your bed all day, but it might very well pay off in the end. Now’s the time to clean those areas of your room or house that you’ve been hoarding small collections of things you don’t actually use or need anymore. If you’re motivated enough to do a little of this cleaning now, it could lessen the load comes Spring when the weather’s actually nice enough to go outside.
6. Invite a Friend over
If you’re actually up for social interaction, make it very clear that this hangout session will exclusively take place inside. Now’s the perfect time to watch the movies you and your friend missed while they were in the theater, drink hot chocolate, eat loads of junk food, and just relax in the presence of each other.
7. Make Dinner for the Fam
Yes, okay some of your cooking and baking experiments probably went terribly wrong in the past, but today is the day where you finally have enough time to reflect and perfect that recipe if your love for making food is still there. Actually, make one of those recipes you’ve seen on the Chew or in one of the million videos you or your friends have shared on Facebook. The only actual challenge of this might be going outside to get into your car and then going to the grocery store to get the ingredients you need, but hey, no pain, no gain!
8. Plan for the Summer
Instead of winging your summer plans like you usually do every year, actually, make a list of things you want to do and places you want to go. Think about working around your work schedule, how much your plans will cost, who you want to come with, and this year just might be the year that your unrealistic plans from the past might seem a little more realistic. Having something to do and look forward to in the future might help you forget about all of the snow that’s outside and get rid of some of that summertime sadness.
