As college students, we worked our hardest to get through a week full of classes, exams, projects, and essays just so that we can relax on the weekends with friends. After being here for over a semester, ideas of what to do on a Saturday afternoon may sometimes run dry. When it seems as if the city is too quiet, the coffee shops are crowded, and the 90 just isn't cutting it for a good meal, there must be an alternative. To keep you occupied during even the most sluggish of days, here are 5 things to do in Lexington when you're looking for something fun and exciting.

Visit downtown Lexington

downtown Lexington, KY

Downtown Lexington contains a multitude of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, hotels, and more. Whether you're looking for a delicious bite to eat, need to quench your thirst, or you're searching for the perfect outfit, The Square downtown has it all. A walk up and down W Main Street will provide you with anything you might think of with museums nearby too.

Keeneland

Keeneland remains open during most of the year, but the true racing occurs in the fall and spring. Opening day at Keeneland is highly popular and attracts tourists and locals alike. As of now, Keeneland is open for tours of the building, the backstretch, and for owner's experience. Keeneland horseracing will begin again in April, so make sure to mark your calendars!

The Summit at Fritz Farm

Similar to downtown Lexington, the Summit at Fritz Farm contains restaurants like Shake Shack and Blue Sushi Sake Grill and clothing stores such as Lululemon and Free People. However, the unique aspect of the Summit is that it is also home to fitness franchises including CycleBar and Orangetheory Fitness. I speak for myself and my friends when I say I could spend an entire day at the Summit and not get bored. Conveniently located near the Fayette Mall on Nicholasville Road, the Summit is perfect for a sunny or rainy day.

Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge, located about an hour out of Lexington, is a canyon system filled with waterfalls, natural bridges, and scenic trails that lead to a cliff which overlooks the area. The area is available to camping, cabin rentals, and rock climbing. It is the perfect way to get some exercise while enjoying your time with friends and family members. Though the hike may get tiring, the view is worth the sweat!

Fayette Mall

Fayette Mall

Being one of the largest malls I have ever walked through, the Fayette Mall has something for everyone. The stores cater to all ranges of people from young children to adults. Not only is there a food court, but other restaurants such as P.F. Change's and Cheesecake Factory are connected to the mall as well. There are department stores and specialty stores at the Fayette Mall that make it appealing to everyone. If you aren't in the mood for shopping, you can catch a movie at the movie theater instead!

I have been able to discover different parts of Lexington with my friends throughout the past six months and have enjoyed each new experience. I highly encourage Lexington visitors to go to at least one of these places, whether you're visiting for the week or even for a day. I appreciate the different aspects of Lexington and its unique qualities because of the exploring I have gotten to do. Whether you decide to go shopping, see the horses, or go for a hike, you will not regret your experience.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
