Charleston (correct pronunciation "chahlston") is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in South Carolina, which means two things:
1. So many incredible things to explore and experience.
2. Wayyyy too many tourists to do it properly without hyperventilating from claustrophobia and heat, at least in the summer.
But...let's focus on the positive! There are so many exciting things to see and do and eat in Charleston, how on Earth could you decide what to cram into a short weekend trip?
Here are a few tips:
1. Tours
If you have good shoes and really want to hear about the history and beauty of this city from a professional, then tours are the way to go. The only difficulty could be in picking which tour to tag along on. There are multiple walking, boating and even EATING tours to keep you and your friends happy. Can you guess which tour I'd pick?
2. Fort Sumter
The notorious site where the first shot of the American Civil War was fired. If you are interested in South Carolina history, American history or simply appreciate the monumental meaning this fort has, this is a must see for you. Tour group or no tour group, it's open for all explorers.
3. Charleston Market
Once the site where slaves would restock the stores of their owner's plantations, the Charleston Market is now a major draw for city residents and tourists alike to look through all the handcrafted jewelry, clothing, toys, etc. that are sold there for a good price.
4. King Street
Even more famous than the market is Charleston's King Street, filled with historic landmarks as well as too many shops, galleries and boutiques for your wallet to remain safe. A walk down King Street will show you large chain stores like Forever 21 in multiple stories, smaller boutiques with a larger price, art galleries, antiques and so much more that you'll have to stop at one of the many delicious cafes for coffee and desert.
5. The Battery
Once upon a time when I was last in Charleston, my friends and I grabbed gelato from a hole-in-the-wall shop and walked around The Battery at sunset. This seaside wall lined with palm trees and antebellum mansions is the perfect place to imagine what life must have looked like 200 years ago. Watching the sun disappear behind the waving Southern Palm trees leaves me breathless every time, and I cannot imagine a better place to see them.
Of course, with all the museums, galleries, and theaters, these are just five of the many things that will make your and my stay in Charleston a remarkable one!
Happy traveling!
