While living in a small town college campus can have its challenges when it comes to excitement, adventure can always be found by those who seek it. Here are a few attractions specifically unique to JSU:
- Crystal Springs Lake-A Summer Swimming Hole
Family owned, this little gem offers a swimming experience like no other. Consisting of swings, diving boards, and slides, Crystal Springs Lake is perfect for those hot Alabama days. Open until Labor Day each year, students can always take a day to have fun in the sun. Located off Highway 204, Crystal Springs is open every day of the week from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
2. The Chief Ladiga Trail-A 33 Mile Long Blacktop
From rails to a trail, Chief Ladiga spans from the Alabama-Georgia line to Anniston, passing through JSU along the way. The smooth black pavement is perfect for skating, biking, and walking as well. It passes through several wooded areas; and, the quiet observer may even happen upon wildlife, including rabbits, squirrels, and birds. Chief Ladiga offers a great way to get away from stress of college in a healthy, positive way.
3. Stephenson Hall-From Recreational Sports to Zumba
Students have free access to Stephenson Hall with their Student ID. There, they can participate in different classes such as Zumba and yog, or become involved in intramural sports (anything from softball and tennis to basketball and beach volleyball). Students have a easy and affordable way to have fun and be fit.
4. JSU Athletics
Nothing captures the spirit of Gamecock pride more than attending a JSU sporting event. Whether cheering on your team at Burgess-Snow Field or in Pete Matthews Coliseum, sporting events offer free ways to get out from under the books and spend some time with friends. The student section can make for much more excitement and is a great way to show support.
5. Tailgates
You can not have a Saturday football game without a tailgate. Whether it be with Greek groups or other organizations, there is bound to be a place to hang out before kickoff. Between food and lazy games of corn hole, the time will tick by.
6. Shopping the Historic Square- From cupcakes to outdoors
Although seemingly small, the Jacksonville Square offers a variety of stores to meet most interests. From boutiques to an outdoor store, the Square will offer some time to walk around and window shop if nothing else.
7. Hammocking- Neon Parachutes Everywhere
Speaking of the outdoors, the trees in Jacksonville are not complete without clusters of brightly colored fabric hanging crisscrossed amongst them. Little cocoons filled with studying students and chatty friends, hammocks are an excellent way to get outside and enjoy the sunny Alabama weather while still being productive.
8. Germania Springs Park-Hammock Heaven and Picnic Paradise
Whether you are 2 or 22, something about swings, slides, and a playground full of screaming kids can offer a great way to hide from responsibility. In addition to the many pavilions and trees for hanging a hammock, Germania Springs has a complete dog park for the furry friends as well.
9. Human Foosball- Need I say more?
Directly off the Ladiga Trail and behind the Jacksonville Community Center is a small wooden structure with giant poles stretching across its width. This is the home of human Foosball. Certainly something unique, this activity would be great for a larger group of people to play. Soccer balls are not provided, but otherwise it is open to public.
10. Frog Town Disc Golf Course-Frogs not included
Another unique opportunity near the Jacksonville Community Center is a nine hole disc golf course. Perhaps a bit more challenging than my other suggestions, the course is a great way to try something new and exciting.
11. Chimney Peak- A cruise with views
Looking over the JSU campus, Chimney Peak offers stunning views and an exhilarating ride. Whether it be for a peaceful view of the sunset or a relaxing place to eat lunch away from the buzz of campus, Chimney Peak is a must for students.
12. Little River Canyon Center-Consider this a bonus
While this may not technically be on the JSU campus, the Canyon Center is a JSU-owned building. Here, visitors can watch a free film on the gorgeous Little River Canyon and browse the gift shop. Visitors can also get directions for the many attractions the Canyon has to offer, such as swimming holes, hiking trails, and places to cliff dive.
