As my freshman year in college is coming to an end, I've decided to compile a list of some things that people have said or asked me about my college experience thus far. Many of these have been said to me multiple times. I'm grateful that people are excited for me and curious about my first year, but these conversations turn to be quite judgemental. I bet other college students have encountered these same questions and feel my pain! Please enjoy my list with my usual responses. Let me know in the comment section if you've ever had to deal with these questions!

1. What's your major?

Well, I am not exactly sure yet. I am thinking maybe English or Creative Writing, but I'm not sure. I just finished my first year in college, so I don’t need to have my future planned out yet.

2. An English or Creative Writing degree? What can you actually do with that degree?

Like I said before, I am not sure what I want to do with my life yet. I love writing and reading and literature, so what’s the problem with making this my possible major? I would love to be an author one day or maybe a journalist, but I'm not sure! I'm only 19! I shouldn't have to have a play by play of my life yet. I can do whatever I put my mind to. Quit questioning me, I’ll be fine.

3. So you don’t mind maybe being dirt poor one day?

I don’t care, as long as I am happy. I would rather be happy and poor than rich and miserable. I might as well do something I love if I am not focused on being extremely wealthy.

4. I bet you have been to some crazy parties!

Are you drunk right now? Do you even know me? I don’t like being in big groups, let alone big groups of drunk people. No thank you, no thank you, no thank you. I'll see you later. Peace.

5. I bet you've tried drugs, like weed. Everyone experiments in college.

Everyone but me, I guess. Sorry to disappoint you, haha.

6. So you don’t party or smoke weed? What do you do in your spare time?!

Well, funny you should ask! I'm doing homework so I get good grades. This sounds super geeky, but it's true. That’s why I'm paying this insane tuition. I’d be selfish to waste this awesome opportunity to study at Hiram College. I'm hanging out with my friends. We actually go out and do stuff besides getting wasted. We go to Nelson Ledges, and go see movies, and we eat a lot. There are more things to do besides getting high or wasted.

7. You are paying how much for tuition?

Yes, I realize this is a ridiculous amount. Let's not talk about it.

8. You're kinda boring.

Yeah, I might seem like it. But I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I am thriving. I am happy. and I am learning. Isn't that what college is all about?

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
