Things I Need to Thank My Friends For More Often

Sometimes I forget that thanking people is a form of love.

Things I Need to Thank My Friends For More Often
Erin Somerville

College is crazy. Between the deadlines, the hectic class schedules and the constant stress, college students somehow make time for the people they value. We spend time with people and tell them that we love them. We sometimes cry on their laps or share our deepest thoughts with them. What I’m trying to get at is this: we all have friends that we make time for somehow. We spend all our time together and never think twice about it and we probably wouldn’t want to trade away their friendship for anything.

However, are we thanking them enough?

As this school year is coming to a quick close, I’m realizing that I’m not thanking my friends enough. They have been there through heartbreak and breakthrough, through the ugly crying at the altar and the times when I’m laughing so hard that my lungs forget how to work. Today, let’s just take a moment to think of some things that we should be thanking our friends for.

1. Thank them for their understanding and their love.

Chances are that you talk to your friends about a lot of things and no matter how many times you go back to an already discussed topic, they are always there to listen to you. They understand your emotions and they love you no matter what, so thank them for this. It could really make a difference in your friendship.

2. Thank your friends for their encouragement.

If you are anything like me, then compliments and encouraging statements are hard to accept most of the time. I can imagine how discouraging this is to my friends, especially when I need encouragement but can’t seem to accept it. Thank them for their encouragement and tell them that you appreciate it, even if it’s hard for you to put it into words.

3. Thank your friends for their laughter.

Even if you have a friend that only seems to know bad or cheesy puns, thank them for it. Laughter is the best medicine when you’re having a bad day, and your friends have probably been there through your hardest days. Their laughter and joy is a gift, and sharing it makes it so easy to forget a bad situation for a few minutes. Be sure that you tell your friends that you’re thankful for their jokes and their laughter, no matter what kind of day it may be!

4. Thank them for their existence.

There are always going to be days where all we want to do is cry or eat our feelings and these are the days where we just need to know we’re appreciated. Chances are that your friends have these days more often than not. No matter what their major is, thanking them for existing could turn their day around.

You’re very important and so are your friends. Conveying your appreciation towards them is very valuable and could make their days brighter. To all my friends who are reading this right now--thank you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
