The Valuable Lessons I Learned From The Blacksmith Trade
the blacksmith forge

Recently I was convinced by my brother to try my hand at the trade of blacksmith. I always thought it was just hammering on iron to make horseshoes and other implements.

However, when I began to just hammer the metal, I realized something that I had never even considered before.

Being a blacksmith is a rare form of art, I confess that before I gave it a try my definition of art consisted of sketching, sculpting, painting, and so on.

But as I saw in my mind what I wanted to create, I realized that it was essentially a very difficult form of painting.

When I paint something, I am just simply revealing what was already on the canvas, but when I began to forge I realized that I was just trying to reveal what was already contained in the metal.

However, it was much more difficult and I learned a few things as I attempted to create my project.

The first thing I realized was that sometimes in forging metal, a soft touch is needed. I thought you just picked up the hammer and forced the metal to bend, but sometimes it is just the slightest touch of the hammer that creates what you need.

Kind of like in life, sometimes a soft answer is the thing you need to bend even the most solid of hearts.

The second thing I learned was that sometimes you have to adjust your way of looking at the problem. I stood looking at a red hot horseshoe for about ten minutes, trying to figure out how to make the right shape, but the more I looked at it, the less it made sense. I went and asked my friend and he simply flipped over the horseshoe and as he began to work it from the other side, I realized that I had been looking at it from the wrong angle.

In the same way, sometimes we just have to adjust our line of sight and the problem we see will become a much more manageable feat.

The last thing I learned from the forge is that even the hardest of metals can be molded into a new shape if enough heat is applied.

In our lives when things get rough, it might just be that God is trying to mold us into something beautiful and our heart is just too hard to be adjusted easily. He applies the heat so He can create something beautiful. We can't lose faith, we can only wait and see the beautiful creation He is working on.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
