In this day and age, people take almost everything for granted, especially older siblings. It took almost 20 years for me to realize how much of a blessing it was to have an older sibling. Older siblings pave the way for all younger siblings. They're the first to get into trouble, the first to experience heartbreak, and the first to go to middle school, high school, and college. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be the older sibling. The first born has to go through all of this with no guidance, whatsoever. It's impressive.
The first born is, basically, a trial run for parents. It's their first time raising a child--they're going to be strict. When the second and third children come around, it's no big deal. They don't have to deal with the crazy curfews and insane rules. I will admit that the oldest sibling definitely had it rough.
Hey parents, does your youngest child need a ride, but you don't feel like driving? Need something cleaned, but don't have time to do it yourself? Do you need a babysitter, but don't have any cash? Don't worry about it! That's what kids are for! Another name for big sibling is "non-profit chauffeur" or "unpaid nanny." Why do something yourself when you can just force someone else to do it?
The older siblings always get blamed for everything. I know this from personal experience. The babies of the family--we're pure evil. We're sneaky and manipulative. We pick fights with our older siblings, and when something doesn't go our way we cry alligator tears. Nine times out of 10, the blame gets put on the oldest. Shoutout to my older sister for not murdering me when she probably should have.
Now, I'm not saying that younger siblings have it completely easy and stress-free. We have it tough, too. We have to live up to the expectations-- good or bad. If the older siblings reputation is bad, guess who has to do damage control. If the older siblings reputation is good, it's even worse. We have to live up to that high expectation that was set, and constantly try to exceed it.
I know that my older sister has definitely made life a lot easier for me. She paved the way for me, and when I started making my own path, she handed me a chisel to make it easier. I am eternally grateful for my older sister.
To all older siblings -- thank you for all you go through and put up with. And speaking on behalf of all younger siblings, I'm sorry for being such a pain in the butt.
To all younger siblings -- stop taking your older siblings for granted. Take a moment to appreciate them.
