Things No One Will Tell You Before You Visit Maine

Vacationland has its downsides.

Maine in the summer is a great place to live, visit, raise a family, go to college, and even fantasize about. But there are some real-life things that no one really talks about when they describe Maine. Yes, we are "Vacationland" and we have miles upon miles of beautiful coastline, endless forests, gorgeous mountains, quaint towns and friendly people, but just like anywhere else in the world, there are some downsides. As a disclaimer, don't let this article fool you, the good vastly outweighs the bad, but consider this article a warning, so you aren't surprised when you come to visit.

First off, there's a good chance that if you are driving literally anywhere in the state of Maine you will run into construction. Not just your occasional patch work on the road, oh no, we're talking full on "rip up the entire five miles of road and pave it as slowly as possible" sort of construction. This construction will have you sitting still for (without hyperbole) hours on end. You'll be put in a position where it's okay to put your car in park while sitting in the middle of a major high way or busy road.

Secondly, if you are able to sneak past the construction, be sure to keep your eyes open for small animals--dead or alive. There is a whole lot of wildlife in Maine, and unfortunately there are also a lot of roads--you do the math. You'll be sure to see skunks, squirrels, chipmunks, gophers, raccoons, rabbits, and even birds. Personally, the first time you accidentally squish one of Snow Whites BFF's, it's a little jarring. But then you drive on and see the metric crap ton of dead animals on the sides of the roads, and you feel a bit better.

Furry friends aren't the only non-humans you'll meet in Maine. That's right, mosquitos, junebugs, ticks, and other creepy crawlies are abundant in the summer in Maine. It's hard to go outside and not be swatting at something when it's warm out here. The not-so-obvious annoyance is the junebugs. These little suckers will hook onto you and no matter what you do, they will come back. So pack your bug spray!

I sincerely hope you still come to visit us up here in Maine, I just wanted you all to be prepared!

P.S. Did I mention construction?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
