5 Things My High School Didn't Teach Me, But I Didn't Expect It To

Some things we learn, others are developed.

Starting college was something that we all know will be different for us. It will be new for us and teach us things that we've never experienced before. Whether academically or socially, high schools aren't always going to give us the tools we need to succeed in college, and even further on in life.

So, here are 5 things I never learned in high school;

1. Motivation.

The majority of the experiences in your life and the way you deal with them will be a product of your character. And motivation adds on to that. High school won't teach you motivation. Compared to college, it's a walk in the park. So your level of "go-get-it-ness" will be a sole product of who you are as a person.

2. The Value of Hard Work.

High school doesn't include things important enough, with enough magnitude to show you the true value of hard work. Being a part of the student section or winning Prom queen won't reap quite the benefits of a lifelong career. In the words of one of my cousins, "Got to grind to recline."

3. Character.

Character is truly what you do, how you act, and the way you carry yourself when no one is watching. In high school and in this day of social media, rarely anything we do is seen by only ourselves. In college, many times we might find ourselves with ample alone time. Those are the moments when your character will candidly shine.

4. Personality.

The way you act in high school, and the way you are in college has the potential to be drastically different and that's OK. In high school, a lot of the people we hang around and associate with are people that we're kind of forced to be friends with. Not in a negative way, but it's your comfort zone, it's the people you've been around for many years of your school life. College is a time many people start fresh. You're able to pick and chose who you're friends with, and it's not based on who you happen to be around. You can choose to dedicate your time to new hobbies and affinities of your personality that you haven't explored before. So there's a good chance you'll change and adapt into a new personality and that's great!

5. What the "Best Four Years of Your Life" Looks Like.

High school is advertised as the "best four years of your life." No. Wrong. False. Incorrect. College? Absolutely yes. High school? Absolutely no. For me, high school was full of low expectations, and a sub-par standard of society. College is a world's difference. People are here because they want to be. People don't cast judgment or shame for everyday actions. The struggle of college is universally understood and life is just, better. Please don't fall for this false notion because it couldn't be any more wrong. In college, you have a new freedom, a new environment, and a new chance to be what you've always wanted to be.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
