Things From My Childhood I Don’t Want To Leave Behind

Laundry magically being cleaned and not having to cook every night? That was the life.

As a college student, I’m in a huge transition period in my life––I’m not a child but I’m not quite on my own yet. While I enjoy learning about how to become a functioning adult, there are some things that kids simply have easier than adults. Here are some funny things from childhood you might not want to leave behind.

Crying to get what you want

When kids cry, sometimes others give into what they want because they don’t want them to be sad. If you try to get your way by crying when you’re an adult, people don’t think it’s sad or precious––they think you’re spoiled. They probably won’t give you what you want because you were supposed to learn not to do that when you were a child.

Putting dirty clothes into a basket and having them magically show up clean

Kids wear clothes and parents wash them. Whether or not you helped fold laundry when you were younger, you still didn’t have to worry about making the time to do your laundry. Making the time to do laundry is a feat that isn’t as easy as it seems.

Eating food made by someone else

When you were a six-year-old you probably weren’t grilling meat and vegetables or mashing potatoes. If you were, that’s great but you’re in the minority on this one. Even if your parents made a dish you hated, you still didn’t have to make it. You probably didn’t realize just how great you had it until you started cooking for yourself in college.

Eating with your hands

Little kids can eat with their hands. Grownups cannot––with exception to a few certain foods. This is a sad truth but it just is not socially acceptable to grab green beans with your hands or smash potatoes on your face unless you are a child. Now I don’t constantly desire to have food on my face but I’m sad that we lost the freedom to have a little fun with it.

Mom kissing all of your boo-boos

Face it––her kisses did wonders for all of the bumps and bruises you got playing outside. When you get hurt in college and she’s not there to comfort you, it hurts so much more.

Riding a Tricycle

Kids’ bicycles are made in cooler colors. There are so many pom-poms, bells, whistles, baskets and other accessories to make a bicycle or tricycle special. Grown-up bicycles can be so boring. Who wants six gears when you can have your own bell?

Getting told to go outside

When you’re a kid, your parents constantly tell you to get outside and go play. When you get older, they tell you that you can’t go outside until you finish your homework. When you get to college, you find yourself watching Netflix in bed with nobody to motivate you because all of your friends are in class or sleeping. I miss my parents motivating me to get up and get active.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
