Things We Forget To Tell Our Big

This one is for you.

Things We Forget To Tell Our Big
Aleas WIlliams

Getting your Big is probably the most exciting part about joining a sorority. Not only do you find a best friend, but you earn a big sister (especially when you grew up with all brothers). A Big is someone who will be there for you no matter what happens or no matter what stupid decisions you make. Littles can never say thank you enough for being blessed to have such a great person walk into our lives.

1. You make me feel special.

You chose me out of my entire pledge class. I was the one from the very beginning, and now you’re stuck with me. Sometimes I think you must be crazy for wanting me, but that just means that you were able to see something in me that no one else could.

2. You rarely tell me “no.”

When I say I want something even as a joke, you want to get it for me. You would do anything to make me happy. I know that I will never go hungry as long as I have you.

3. You are always by my side.

At every meeting or event, you are next to me. My first meeting as an officer, I didn’t even have time to get nervous. You always believe in me before you even know what I’m going to do.

4. You’re like another mom.

You have medicine for me when I’m not feeling well, and you let me lay on you or put my feet in your lap. Not to mention you always want to take pictures with me when something is happening. You’re always proud of me for even the littlest things.

5. But you’re also like a sister.

I love hearing all the latest gossip from you. You’re the main reason that I even know what’s going on half the time. If I have a question about anything, you always have the answer, and if you don’t, then you will stop what you’re doing to find out.

6. You’re my biggest fan.

At everything that I do, you're always in the audience. You are the first one to congratulate me and tell me how perfect I am, even if I mess up. Of course, you will also want to take more pictures.

7. You never give up on me.

When I’m struggling, you are always there to help. You pretty much taught me how to study. You also taught me that frozen yogurt is the best medicine for tears. Any bad day or a bad week always gets better when I have you to lean on.

8. You always give the best gifts.

Every single holiday requires a gift. Even if we don’t discuss getting each other anything, we both show up with presents. Every other Big and Little pair is jealous of us, I’m sure. I mean, how did I get so lucky to matched with you?

9. You never forget about me.

I will never have trouble finding a ride if I need one. You will always be the person I call first. I will never have to worry about you missing birthdays and other dates. I’m sure you’ll tell me “happy birthday” like a month in advance because you just can’t wait. Maybe I’m kidding, but who knows?

10. You made the chapter my home away from home.

Like almost everyone, I had my doubts about joining a sorority. "What if I didn’t fit in?" "What if no one liked me and I couldn’t make friends?" However, you kept my hopes up throughout the whole new member process, and never gave me the chance to even think about giving up. I stayed for the friendships, the fun and the memories — but I joined for you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
