7 Things To Remember Your First Month Of Freshman Year

College is hard; don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I am obsessed with coffee, drowning in homework, and I haven't worn actual pants in weeks.

College is also super amazing; the "freedom" (I'll explain), the friends, the memories, and the actual classes themselves. It's such a surreal experience and I love every second of it, pain and all.

1. DON'T SKIP CLASS

Giphy

Number one rule of all time, DON'T SKIP CLASS. Even if the teacher doesn't take off for attendance, going to class is super important. Yeah, most teachers put their class notes on canvas or you can borrow from your class, but there are certain things you learn and remember from actually sitting in class and listening. Also, most teachers only give one or two excused absences for sick days, so don't waste them. Which also leads me to my next point.

2. Take vitamins or you will get sick.

Giphy

Literally all of my friends have been getting sick. WE'RE DROPPING LIKE FLIES AROUND HERE. SEND HELP.

3. Walk to class if you can.

Giphy

I love Lindenwood, it's an amazing college, but the campus is killer. There are hills EVERYWHERE. I typically have to drive to class because my classes are all the way across campus, up a hill, and up like 5 flights of stairs. If I don't lose like 20 pounds by the end of the semester I will be crying.

4. Invest in the good snacks.

Giphy

My friend bought those mac and cheese cups from the dollar store and went on a rant about how salty they were. Were they cheaper? Yes. Did she waste the dollar and throw them away just to buy the regular ones that are only 3 dollars? Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Spend the extra few dollars on the good snacks. #treatyoself

5. Don't worry about labels.

Giphy

"Cliques disappear after high school! Everyone hangs out with everyone!" This is like 90% true. Everyone does hang out with everyone, but the clique system doesn't just disappear. It's different, but it's there. I have a few different friend groups I do different things with and I get along with all of them the same way. Embrace the labels, you'll have many.

6. Don't be afraid of greek life.

Giphy

Sorority/fraternity life is scary. Going into it is a lot of work, but it is SO worth it. I already love every single one of my sisters and I would do anything within my power that they need. They're always there for me and I always want to be there for them. I wouldn't trade my sorority for anything.

7. TAKE NAPS.

Giphy

Naps make life worthwhile. Naps, oh blessed naps, I apologize for the years of me pushing you away, please come back to me. Take. Naps.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
