10 Things You MUST Do Your First Year In Boone
Shannon Wolfe

Is it your first year at App State or just your first year living in Boone? Here are 10 things you have to do before your first year is over.

1. Tailgating and attending an Appalachian State football game

There's nothing like cracking a cold one with the boys on a good fall day in the mountains. Then going to see the best football team in North Carolina play the not so good teams from everywhere else. Go 'Neers, Drink Beers.

2. Take a picture at Rough Ridge

The most iconic spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Freak out your parents by posting a picture on the rock that seems to hang above 600 feet or more when in reality you would probably survive the fall.

3. Spray Paint in the Expression Tunnels

Get your friends and spray paint anything you need to express yourself, just please, no more racist stuff. Everyone in Boone is over it and it's not funny. However, Dicks Out For Harambe was pretty good.

4. Go to Appalachian Mountain Brewery

Although you cannot drink there until you're 21 (obviously), you can still go and listen to some live music or play some cornhole with your friends.

5. View the fall colors from the Blue Ridge Parkway

Take in all the beauty of fall by taking a drive down the parkway and stopping off on any of the overlooks. But be aware of all the tourists that also enjoy all the fall colors and come to see them also.

6. Go snowboarding at App Ski on College Night

On college night it's only around $35-45 for rental and your lift ticket. Although, everywhere that has college night is going to be packed so expect waiting and crowds and everything in between.

7. Take a group fitness class at UREC

Campus can be an exercise all in itself if you walk around enough, but why not take a fitness class to really get your summer bod ready? Join in with the group and make some friends!

8. Go swimming in the mall parking lot

Giphy

When hurricanes come through or just awful rain be prepared to expect flooding in Boone mall's parking lot. Grab your floaties, tubes, and kayaks to get ready for a pool party in the parking lot.

9. Take a picture with Yosef

Of course you have to try and get a picture with Yosef the most manly of all the mountain men! Wear his hat, give him a high five and a hug then snap the perfect fire shot for the gram. But be sure to tag him in it.

10. Pull an all nighter in the library

Giphy

Everyone has to do this at least once. Are you even a procrastinator if you don't end up pulling an all-nighter? Probably not. So bring some snacks and coffee and camp out on whichever floor you seem to favor.

So if you're a new student, transfer student, or just visiting here in the high country be sure to try at least one of these. You never know what you might find!

Sincerely,

Another ADHD Student

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
