Being in college, I am in some classes that are really just not going to be useful in my future in healthcare. Some of my classes are ones that I have to take to graduate because of a core plan that my school makes every student take.
But have you ever thought about classes that should be part of such a core plan that are just not offered? Here are a few that I have been able to come up with!
1. Taxes 101
This class would be so beneficial for after graduation. If you're anything like me, you're like, "What in the heck are taxes? How does one pay such a thing?" This would be such a useful skill to learn before entering the real world so that I don't, you know, get angry calls from the government asking for the money I owe them. But I guess I will have to cross that bridge alone when I get there!
2. Napping 421
Notice how this class is a 400-level course. Yes, I need a hardcore napping class. A class whose sole purpose is to allow me to pass out for a solid 55-minute class period. And maybe it could teach me some good sleeping/napping techniques. Why not have a class to help fix every college kid's messed up sleep schedule?
3. Adulting 311
This is one that we all need. Being in college, we are like fake adults. We know how to handle ourselves (for the most part), but it's not the real world just yet. We still have dining halls to lean on and parents that usually are able to help us when inconveniences arise. But the real world is not like this. We need a class to learn how to "adult" and thrive once we graduate.
4. How To Cook For Yourself 121
My biggest fear for moving off campus is cooking for myself. All my life, I have relied on my parents to have food ready for me when I get home from school/practice. In college, I have learned to rely on the dining halls to provide me with all my nutritional needs. However, having my own apartment comes with needing to feed myself now. If only there was a class offered that could teach me easy yet nutritional recipes for college students. That would truly be a blessing.
5. How To Make Adult Friends 101
In college, it is almost impossible to not make friends. From living in dorms to taking classes every day to joining Greek life/other clubs, there are endless opportunities to meet friends. However, I feel as though the opportunities are much more limited upon graduation. I don't know about you, but I sure don't want to end up as that one adult who works all day and has no friends to come back home to afterward. Although this is a skill you basically have to figure out for yourself, a class on how to not be awkward in asking for someone's number might be helpful.
6. How To Be In A Wedding 321
Having friends in college makes this inevitable! Before we know it, all of our friends are going to be getting married, and we are going to have no idea how to be in a wedding (especially if you're like me and have never been to a wedding before). A class on how to be a bridesmaid/groomsman would be oh so helpful!
7. How To Schedule Doctor Appointments 101
I don't know if this is just me, but I always have the hardest time scheduling doctor's appointments. Picking up the phone to call the daunting receptionist just freaks me out a little! I also always tend to mess up the date and/or time and have to end up calling again to fix it. SOS, I need a class to teach me how to do this!
8. How To Handle Setbacks 201
Many of us college kids have huge goals for post-graduation. Inevitably, some of these goals simply will not be met. It is important to have a backup plan in the event that your goals cannot be feasibly reached. This is a harsh reality that college students don't realize until after graduation. A class that hits us with reality is needed.
9. How To Balance And Use A Checkbook 101
I know how to use a checkbook, but many of my friends have no idea how to navigate one! This is an important skill to learn as this has to do with real money, and it is a skill that real adult-ing adults use almost every single day!
10. How To Pay Bills And Work Bank Accounts 301
When it comes to utilities, it can be so hard to know how to pay, when to pay, etc. If only there was a class for that! Even moving off campus for junior/senior year involves paying bills. It's better to learn early than the day before the first payment is due! Also, learning how a bank account works would be nice too! I know I always confuse checkings, savings, and banking accounts.
11. How To Sew Clothing 111
This one is especially useful! I always lose buttons on my shirts, pants, dresses, you name it! But I can never figure out how to sew them back on (I go to my mom friend who knows how to do just about anything). A class in this skill could help all college students be able to save any and all clothing!
12. How To Change A Tire 101
This is something that I was vaguely taught in driving school but didn't pay particular attention to. We all have that one time where we were going on a road trip and got a flat tire. How nice would it have been to know exactly how to fix said tire! A class like this could solve that problem! Plus, I would feel a whole lot cooler if I could fix someone's tire in the event that theirs goes flat.
* * *
All in all, college is a great experience, but there are some classes that I so wish were on the course list! Some life skills need to be self-taught, but others would do great in a class format. Maybe someday we'll have these functional classes in all colleges!
