20 Things I Learned Before I Turned 20
Madison Dennis

Each year, you grow stronger as a person. That doesn't just happen naturally, it happens because of the lessons you learn each year. Each year we learn lessons that shape us to be better human beings and to help guide us through life. We learn through experiences, our mistakes, and because of the people around us. Here is what I learned before turning 20. All of these lessons are embedded in our lives so we can live better the next year. Without these lessons, we would never to grow as a person through each of the years we have on this earth.

Family is everything

They will always be there at the end of the day!

Not everyone is your friend

fake friends

It is hard to except but people just aren't meant be and that's okay. Your better off without them anyway.

A lot of people will tell you NO, so listen to that one YES

no no no

A lot of people will tell you no about your dreams and ideas but someone in this world will give you a chance.

You do not need anyone to believe in you, other than yourself

At the end of they day, you are the only one who can make your dreams come true.

Work hard even if you think you'll never need it

Work hard in the classes or things you do because you might need it one day in the world even if you don't think you'll need it now.

Keep your dreams even if they seem hard to reach

dream job

Keep your dreams even if you think you can't achieve them at that point because you never know what the future holds.

Filter through the opinions your hear

A lot of people will give opinions on their beliefs or what they think you should be doing but learn how to block some of it out.

Your sisters are your best friends

They are my best friends! I call them for everything and always do everything together!

People come into your life to teach you a lesson

People will come and go but they always teach you a lesson.

Try to get enough sleep every night

sleeping

Get that 7-8 hours of sleep because no one likes to be tired!

Do things that make you happy

happy

Do things that make you happy because our time on earth is limited.

Don't let anyone stop you from your dreams

dreams

Enough said...

 Kill people with kindness

kill them with kindness

No matter how people treat is a reflection of them not you so always treat people with kindness.

 Stay loyal

Always stay loyal to your people.

 Try different things

different things

Always try different things because they can work better for you or you may even like it more.

Traveling the world will open your eyes

You will realize how huge the world actually is once you travel to Europe.

 Some friendships never fade

Some family isn't blood.

Get as much experience as possible in whatever you do

Experience is everything! It will help you get greater knowledge in what you want to do.

 People don't define you

gossip

People's opinions of you do not define you!

Let your haters be your motivators

bring you down

Allow people to hate on you! Your doing something they want so use it has motivation.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
