As the end the spring semester is winding down, thoughts of home are swirling around my brain. This was the first year I have ever been homesick in my entire life, and luckily I have had the opportunity to go home quite a lot since I don't live too far away. However, I still longed for my normal routine and the sight of my mom and sister every day I was not home. With the few weeks we have left, I thought I would share with you everything at Bridgewater State University that reminds me of my home, Cape Cod.
Seagulls.
Never did I think in my life that I would miss hearing/seeing seagulls. They are obnoxiously loud and always trying to steal your food or poop on everything. But I live on the beach, so the sound of seagulls squawking is constant back home.
Crickets.
Every night, during the summer especially, crickets were the only way I could fall asleep peacefully. Here in Bridgewater with the train being a constant and the silence that seems to occur on campus sometimes, it's was hard to fall asleep, even now sometimes it still is. But when I first heard crickets chirping outside I was so excited to have their beautiful chirping.
Carver's Pond.
Bless my dorm being so close to a pond, otherwise, I would have gone crazy without SOME form of nature to walk around in. A number of times I have spent here to relax on the many benches on either side of the pond or take a run to blow off steam instead of staying in my dorm has been quite a lot this year.
Autumnfest.
Although this is held during the fall and not in the spring, Autumnfest here in Bridgewater reminded me so much of the annual Brewster In Bloom parade/festival in my hometown Brewster. With little stands and vendors set up on Boyden Hall lawn, with live music and stands for food everywhere.
Rhododendrons.
Now I know a random bush in the plant species isn't too important, but rhododendrons are special to me. There is one huge bush in my front yard, standing a few feet taller than me. Ever since I was little, I have always loved this bush. When all the rhododendrons bloomed in front of Boyden Hall I was thrilled to see the beautiful magenta flowers.
All the brick buildings.
Even though I'm not from Boston and I don't live relatively close, I've spent a lot of time in that city. When applying for colleges, one of my main interests were all the campuses that had all brick buildings. My favorite part of Boston is the old apartment buildings all made of brick, and I would spend a lot of time wishing I lived there when I was younger.
Having a roommate.
Now I know this might sound weird, but having a roommate has really reminded me of home a lot this year. My whole life my younger sister and I have shared a room together, at both parents' houses, so sharing a room with another person actually made my daily routine a lot easier than if I was alone my first year at college.
My voice lesson teacher.
If I could get my private voice teacher from this year to meet my high school choir teacher, they would become inseparable. They are so much alike in their teaching styles and personalities and I am so happy to have had two beautiful and talented women in my life.
Chorale.
I am so happy I took chorale this semester. Never did I think I would miss my high school choir as much as I did this year, and chorale made me feel right back in my element, with difficult pieces and a wonderful conductor. (P.S. props to Nauset Regional High School for all the gold and awards they just received at competition in Montreal, Canada, I'm so proud of you all!)
And last but most definitely not least....
My best friend Lexi.
Friends since 2nd grade, and friends forever (cause let's face it she doesn't have a choice), we have done so much together. From classes in school, to Skippers, to just hanging out or going on adventures, she's been one of my closest friends. I am proud to say we both attend Bridgewater State University together, and I have no idea how I could have gotten through this first year without her. She is the piece of home that traveled with me.
