10 Things All College Freshman NEED To Have

These are brutal, thank me later.

10 Things All College Freshman NEED To Have
Victoria Hockemeyer

It's the start of another school year y'all and here comes the frightening thing that is, your first year of college. Being just out of my freshman year of college here are the ten things I learned you absolutely need to have for college.

1. A Daily/Weekly Planner

Whether it's Erin Condren's Life Planner or if its a $5 planner from Wal-Mart, invest in at least one, you'll use it every single day.

2. A life proof book bag.

I don't mean literally life proof but I do mean that your book bag is going to carry your entire life for the entire school year. Spend good money to get a good one.

3. A pillow and blanket.

Keep it in your car, you never know when a spontaneous nap will come about.

4. A Keurig or coffee maker.

Getting coffee on your way to class everyday may sound nice but you don't want to blow through all of your graduation money the first month of college (life I did).

5. A budget.

If you do not budget your spending you WILL blow through all of it, very quickly. It is a lot easier in college just to go grab food between classes than it is to pack a lunch, but please pack a lunch, you'll be way better off in the long run.

6. A personal journal or somewhere to put your thoughts.

I personally carry 3 personal notebooks on me at all times just in case I need them but I think having somewhere to put your random thoughts you don't want to forget or little study habits you want to remember. Having a separate journal is a fantastic way to do that.

7. A Netflix account.

Even in the chaos that is college, you need to take some time to yourself and binge watch sometimes.

8. An entire pocket of sharpies, multi-colored pens, pencils, etc.

You will lose all of them by the end of the school year but this is another thing you really can't go without.

9. A mini stapler, paper clips, and binder clips.

You'll thank me later.

10. A positive outlook.

I am still working on this one because if you're like me, you may be unsure of what you're going to school for but let me tell you, no matter how you look at college "it is just four years of your life and it is going to fly by so fast". College goes faster than high school. Don't waste it by being in a bad mood.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
