13 Things 2017 Has Given Me
McKenna Williams

As 2018 is approaching, I have been reflecting on the past year and everything I have been given since January 1, 2017. I have gained so much more than I ever knew was possible and I thought I would share some of the most important things 2017 has given me.

1. A trip to the Happiest Place on Earth

Disney is and always will have my entire heart, so it was definitely one of the best parts of my year.

2. 11 new family members

Every single one of us still keep in touch and see each other every chance we get.

3. The best friendship I could ever ask for

I love our spur of the moment lunch dates and her weekend long stays at my apartment.

4. The chance to watch a baby grow into a boy

He learned to read, write, and shoot a Nerf gun better than any little kid I know.

5. A lot of laughs

Even through the pain.

6. A high school diploma

After 13 long, hard years.

7. One last hoorah with my graduating class

The Bahamas will never be the same.

8. A love stronger than anything I could've ever imagined

There's not much better than falling head over heels in love with someone and knowing they are doing the exact same thing.

9. A new haircut

No matter how enticing it may seem at the time, don't do it. You will regret it.

10. A newfound hate for germs

Thank you, Still's Disease.

11. An appreciation for my mom

Let's face it, I'm a handful, and she handles this handful effortlessly.

12. New adventures

New friends call for new places.

13. A new home

Jacksonville State, you have my heart.

Although I only listed the good things brought to me during 2017, it wasn't without its faults. I got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, struggled with homesickness, and so many other things.

I want to thank you, 2017, for being one of the best and worst years of my life. You've taught me so much about myself that I never knew I needed to know.

Here's to you, 2018. Let's see what you've got.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
