I was 16 when I was first introduced to thin privilege on Tumblr. It started out in drawn comics, revealing how overweight people are discriminated by pretty much everyone and everything. From dogs (yes, apparently dogs refuse to play with fat people) to clothing stores (for not selling over a 3X), “thin privilege” is something that keeps you from suffering the “prejudice” of being fat as imposed by society. However, most rational people are aware that “thin privilege” does not exist.
Everyday Feminism published an article almost four years ago titled, “22 Examples of Thin Privilege” by Shannon Ridgway. Everyday Feminism is often losing followers and getting controversial attention from their articles. Many of their articles are entirely biased and represent the radical feminism that is basically poison. I’ll be reviewing two of Ridgway’s examples of “thin privilege," as this article has echoed into the internet realm and into the minds of thousands of people.
1. “You’re not assumed to be unhealthy just because of your size”
Insinuating that thin people are never told they are unhealthy for their size shows Ridgway is clearly ignorant to the fact that thin people share the struggle of being deemed unhealthy. In fact, I was taught that it was inappropriate to tell someone they are too fat, but that it was obviously unhealthy to “appear” too skinny. Not to mention the amount of overweight girls promoting the logic of, “Men want meat not bones.” Nice try, though.
2. “Your body type isn't a sexual fetish”
This must be why “extra small” and “thin, girlish” porn stars are so popular. Alisa Ford, Melanie Masters, and Jennifer Bliss are seen as a sexual fetish for their bodies that are relatively known for being “childish” and “petite.” I share this body type and can testify that anything can be a fetish – don’t challenge the internet.
While “thin privilege” appears to be a concept made to martyr overweight people and to demonize thin people, only a fool would be unable to see that “fat shaming” is prevalent in our society. “Fat shaming” is another “Tumblr originated term” that means to insult, harass, and discriminate someone based on their weight.
I believe that the true goal of the “thin privilege” activists truly want to end “fat shaming” and social negativity towards overweight individuals. However, these activists resorted to subjecting anyone seen as thin to feel guilt based on something most overweight people claim is almost impossible to change, their size. It’s a tragic martyr system that occurs in almost every walk of life, two polarized opposites fighting for 'who has it worse.'
There is still time to remember what is important: growing stronger and growing together as one harmonious world. While I am human and find myself judging others before taking a look in the mirror, we should be taking steps toward abandoning judgement. Thin privilege, the myth that surrounds the minds of bitter persons across the globe, is nothing more than a block in our way of becoming one.
