Give it up to Mrs. Kim Kardashian West for starting the "newest trend" in fashion! Boxer braids are currently the new rage. These braids are intricate and of course we can find a million videos on how to do this all new style!
I have never seen braids done like this before!
Kim is so innovative!
How did she come up with such an amazing style?
The style is not boxer braids, as these are, in fact, cornrows.
Let's have a quick little history lesson on cornrows. Cornrows were used all throughout Africa, and date back to antiquity. Cornrows were not just a trendy hairstyle that people wore. They were used to identify social status, religion, age, etc.
There is a difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. A person can appreciate a culture without taking things from that culture and claiming it is their own. Appreciation of a culture requires you to have respect and understanding. Through cultural appreciation you are learning about a culture and gaining knowledge about it.
Cultural appropriation occurs when one group takes a culturally significant practice or style from another and adopts it as their own without giving credit to the original group.
Cornrows are not just a hairstyle, it is an important staple in the black culture. A white person can put on cornrows and all of the sudden it's something new and trendy, while the black community has been doing this for centuries, and told to take them out because it is unprofessional or "ghetto." Black women are basically forced to get weaves to get rid of their natural hair, because it is an unwanted style. We have a prime example of white privilege, ladies and gentlemen.
Kim Kardashian West's little sister, Kylie Jenner, was confronted on social media by actress Amandla Stenberg when she posted a picture of herself wearing cornrows in her hair.
With the caption "I woke up like disss," Stenberg was quick to fire back at Jenner's problematic behavior commenting: "when u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter."
It is not right to take something that is culturally significant to a group of people, and claim it as your own. The more and more this happens, and nobody speaks up about it, the more people will think that it is acceptable to do.
The black community, and many other minorities groups, are oppressed people. As a society we need to wake up and put an end to appropriating behavior and instead appreciate and gain an understanding of the different backgrounds that you and others may come from.
