Nathan Allen

University of Kentucky senior Nathan Allen has always had the idea of his own apparel brand in the back of his mind.

This fall, when Shrineridge Apparel begins shipping orders, Allen's idea will be very much in the front of his mind, as it has been for several months now.

Allen has been designing t-shirts for his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, almost since the beginning of his college career. Through that process, he discovered that he had a serious passion for designing apparel, and that's where the concept for Shrineridge began in Lexington, but the heart of the company is in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Shrine Ridge is a three-mile trail located near Vail, Colorado. Nathan Allen and his twin brother, Jason, have been hiking the trail together since they were small children.

Together, the two have identified the trail as their "spot," and they've carried that love for Shrine Ridge into the name of their new company.

"This trail is very attainable, but it's beautiful," Nathan said when I asked him about Shrine Ridge and the name of the brand. That idea of accessible utility and the spirit of the Western lifestyle is carrying the Shrineridge brand forward, but more importantly, the brand is driven by values and a mission: helping people find their spot, and then getting lost in it.

The Allens have always known the Colorado mountains to be their "spot," but a tragic event a couple of years ago inspired action.

Kevin Spears, a cousin of the Allens, passed away and left behind a sailboat called Kailana. Kevin loved to sail, and he never let any of life's stresses get in the way of that. Sailing was Kevin's "spot," and that legacy has carried into the Allens' new brand.

According to Shrineridge's Kickstarter page, Spears "left behind his sailboat, but also a legacy that perfectly embodies what we want this brand to be about."

Nathan said, "I wanted to do something to honor him." That catalyst combined with Nathan's love for design and ideas, Jason's marketing skills, and their "spot" on Shrine Ridge gave way to their brand, and to the Kailana fleece, in honor of Kevin.

Soon after, Tyler Glass joined the Allens to complete their team. A childhood friend of Nathan and Jason, Tyler was inspired to join Shrineridge after the Allens shared their "spot" with him on Shrine Ridge, as pictured below.

Now, Glass heads up internal operations for the team, serving as their liaison with suppliers and manufacturers.

Shrineridge operates on four goals, which comprise their company mission.

1. To help you find your spot and get lost in it.

2. To help you showcase your spot and look good doing it.

3. To help you share your spot and be proud of it.

4. To help you support your spot and give back to it.

Shrineridge is driven by those four goals, and they each offer a glimpse of things to come in the company's future.

On Tuesday, August 25, Shrineridge will begin accepting pre-orders for their fall line, found here.

In addition to placing a pre-order, you can support Shrineridge by checking out their Kickstarter page, or by following them on Facebook.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

Bucket List To Live In The Now

Find excitement in your life and start exploring wherever you are right here, right now.

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

Great Value Colleges

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.

The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.

Christmas is literally so close. We can almost taste it. But there is just one thing standing between you and the big day: FINALS. It's not the studying, lack of sleep, last minute cram sessions or crappy food intake that is the worst... but the fact that you cannot focus because, well, CHRISTMAS.
