Everyone has those days where nothing seems to go right. The alarm didn’t go off, there was no more hot water for the shower, and a pop quiz was given in class. Its days like this when the skies are cloudy, the world seems to be against you and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s hard to keep in mind that the grass can be greener as long as you are willing to climb the fence.
Every morning when I wake up, I make my bed. No matter what is going on in my life or how sick I may be, I make my bed. I don’t make it to keep my room clean, and I don’t make it at the chance that cute boy from chemistry comes back to my room. I make my bed to accomplish my first task of the day. Tackling the day one step at a time makes it easy to overcome setbacks and get things done. Making your bed is a small accomplishment, but the first achievement of the day is always the hardest, why not make it easy? When I make the first check mark on my ‘to-do list,' it triggers a domino effect where I start to be productive and get things done. A small accomplishment such as making my bed can lead to me finishing that lab report or studying for that big final.
On the other hand, some days it’s hard to stay positive; it’s just a bad day. It’s hard to look on the bright side while getting a parking ticket or failing your midterms. Since I made my bed, on days like this I can go home and smile, knowing that I accomplished something good today. Going home to my made bed reminds me that it’s just a bad day and not a bad life. Life knocks you down sometimes, but thinking of the positives in your life, no matter how small, can make or break you.
So whether I win big on a scratch ticket or break up with my boyfriend, I will have accomplished something positive every single day of my life. It’s funny to think that something as small as making the bed can lead to such a positive message. After a bad day I get to sleep in a made bed, and when I wake up I choose to flip the page as apposed to close the book. Life is a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs, but at the end of the day, no matter good or bad, I always have a made bed to come home to.
