Would it be so hard to wake up one morning and not check your devices, your social media, the virtual world that never sleeps? Balance is always talked about, whether by researchers, scientists or those you know so well, but does talk stay as talk? Is there nothing done to make talk reality?
We once lived in a world where letters were how we communicated -- or weren't -- with one another, where we had to bike over to a friend's place to hang out or ask them out for lunch, or where we had to ask someone how they're really feeling rather than scrolling through their endless tweets.
We once opened books and got lost in imaginary worlds rather than opening up a browser and first seeing updates on the latest gossip in the media. We now have the world in our hands at the touch of a screen, which is phenomenal, but the online world is exactly that -- online.
Technology has become our paperback books, our fascinating and at times liberating way of escaping from the present world to indulge in the words and adventures of others, to become informed about everything and anything, and to document and share our own work, our stories.
This is a beautiful privilege we've all been given, but never forget how stories are made -- by adventures. As we all know, taking snapshots of fun and meaningful moments feels good, but let's not forget that sometimes the best moments in life go undocumented.
There's nothing wrong with detaching from your device and keeping special moments with people you care about to yourself, just like there's nothing wrong with posting them; just find a healthy balance.
With each waking moment comes the opportunity to seize the day. It is easy to fall into the routine of things: checking social media, taking the same route to work, having yet another morning cup of coffee, sending out repetitive emails, knowing exactly what to expect each hour of every day. But what happened to curiosity?
What happened to the thrill of not knowing what's coming next or not knowing the answers to everything? We may be able to do a quick search for what we're looking for in less than a minute nowadays, but where's the fun in that?
Adventure is still out there. You might just need to take a pause, step away from distractions, whether that's technology or routine tasks, and ask questions again -- questions that require you to step out of the familiar environment you are in and explore the unknown.
It may be beautiful to see an incredible photo of a sunset eliciting its rich and deep hues of orange and yellow across the darkening sky, but it's even better to experience it. Getting lost in nature or exploring cities with good company will always beat an hour of scrolling through content that does nothing for you in the long run.
Don't be afraid to try something you've never done before, to take time off for yourself or to take on a project that seems risky simply because you'll have to step out of your comfort zone.
Instead, view each seemingly uncomfortable thing that comes your way as an opportunity to learn, to grow and to wonder. You will never know the beauty of adventure and what might come from it if you don't make an effort to let go and fully experience it.
Let go of routine, let go of ego, and live with wonder. Express gratitude each morning for another day of life because it is another day of possibilities. Do things each day that lift you up!
Adulthood does not need to mean the end of excitement and living in an Internet-driven world doesn't mean anyone should get comfortable with instant gratification and infinite scrolling; it just means you have more control over what you choose to consume, to do, and to create.
We may document our lives more often than not now, but behind every photo or every video, create a narrative worth sharing. Stay curious, be present, and make every day an adventure.
