There is always goodness in the world. Though it is oftentimes unfair, arduous, there are events that happen that leave us confounded and miserable time-after-time. There is so much that we can't control-terrorist attacks, cancer, car accidents, natural disasters, the bad choices other individuals make and the list goes on and on. And sure, we could focus on that.
Or we could, maybe, just hold closer to the belief that there is always goodness in the world.
I'm a Christian, and I believe that the goodness in the world comes from God and those who serve Him in love here on the earth help to carry it out, to make the world a more loving and hopeful place. But I also know that many people have been hurt by the very people who claim to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and for that, I'm terribly sorry.
I've been hurt by my brothers and sisters of Christ more than I care to admit. But still I hold on to the belief that there is goodness in the world. Even in the midst of terrible tragedy, there is always good in the world.
March has been a tough month for my family, ever since my grandpa died on Mar. 14, 2008. It's been even harder since my other grandfather passed in March three years later. Now, my uncle is approaching death's door and it is once again, March. Even now I know, there is always goodness in the world.
As much as death tries to tear us apart from our loved ones, rip those oftentimes in the prime of their lives — so frequently without meaning or warning, not even enough time for final goodbyes — I know that there is goodness in the world.
We may not have the privilege to prevent tragedy, but we have the privilege with how we deal with tragedy. We have the choice to wallow in our grief, bury our heads in the sand or numb ourselves by any means possible. We also have the choice to move on with our lives, not as if they never lived but strengthened by their memory and the positive ways they affected our lives. We have the choice to press on in joy, providing comfort to others and know that there is still hope. We have the choice to believe that there is still goodness in the world and perhaps even goodness after leaving this world.
More than believing that there is goodness in the world, there is the ability within each and every one of us to be the goodness in the world.
So, be the goodness today. This could manifest in a variety of ways, so I'll only list a few.
Do something good for someone else. I'm not a huge fan of the phrase "random acts of kindness" because whenever someone does something good for something else it's not random. But find someone who is struggling today and do something good for them. Could be as simple as leaving a coffee or chocolate bar on their desk. Unless they're allergic. Make sure they don' t have allergies.
You could give them a note or a hug, say encouraging words or do something for them. Just, do something good for someone else.
You could also do something good for yourself. Go for a hike, treat yo' self to a treat, do something that makes you happy so then you can become a better purveyor of goodness.
Call up an old friend you haven't talked to in forever. Or, call your mom. Moms aren't called enough. Dads too.
Give someone a smile. It's crazy how effective it is, just giving someone a smile as you walk by. More often than not, they will smile back. (Note-this may only apply in the South. And always be aware of pervs).
Or do something else. You're your own person, you have a brain. You know what goodness is and you know how to be loving. So, be loving and do good. And don't let the bad parts of this world bring you down.
