What are the first things that people think of when Greek life is brought up? Meeting boys or girls and parties! Of course we all know that Greek life is so much more than parties with the opposite sex, but there is also a good (fun) chunk of activities that match this expectation.
For those who don't know, exchanges are the closest thing to the raging parties that happen in the movies. They are parties (usually at bars) where sorority and fraternity members come together, dressed in theme, to hang out and get hammered.
So, without further ado, here you have it: Theme of the Week, brought to you by yours truly every week. We'll start with one of my favorites, "High School Stereotypes."
This, as the name would imply, requires one to think about all of the lovely stereotypical groups that occur in high school. Were you a jock? Stoner? Actually, it doesn't matter. You can dress however you want! Stereotypes in high school might not have been funny back then, but they are now! So, we might as well embrace it and know how to dress accordingly.
Nerd
This (hopefully) doesn't require too much description. T-shirt (white is preferred), suspenders, shorts (or if you're a girl nerd: a skirt), fake glasses. Nerd costumes play double duty to Mathletes vs. Athletes – another exchange theme – so, these items should be common to any Greek's wardrobe. Bottom line: there's no excuse to not be able to throw a nerd ensemble together.
Goth
Alright, this is when we wear black on black and call it goth, even though none of the pieces are Gothic whatsoever. This is also when it's acceptable to wear eyeliner on the bottom eyelid – maybe even on your lips. However, this stereotype has an element of behavior – it wouldn't be complete without a few photos of you mean-mugging your best friend's iPhone camera.
Schoolgirl
There's always one girl ballsy enough to do it – and it's usually me. That girl owns a schoolgirl skirt from Ragstock and wears it with a tied up dress shirt circa Britney Spears. Personally, I wear my hair in high pigtails (curled of course) with bows in my hair. I think it's a nice touch.
Whatever you choose to dress as, it's all about owning the universal exchange items and incorporating those into your getup for the night. Creativity is key, and so is having a friend that you can borrow from. If all else fails, it's always fun to shop at Ragstock with your best friends.
