The "S" Word and Why I Kept Living

Suicide. Pretty heavy word, right? This week is national suicide prevention week. This week it is okay to talk about the heavy stuff. It is always okay to talk about the heavy stuff. It it my hope that by writing this article the stigma around suicide will change, even if it's just for one person. It is my hope that those who are contemplating suicide find a reason to keep living. It is my hope that everyone who reads this article will be able to smile about the wonderful life they have and all the exciting adventures that are to come to them.

In other articles I have written I have talked about my own personal struggles with depression and adversity. To contribute to To Write Love On Her Arms's program this week, here is why I Kept Living:

1. Because my family has not seen me accomplish all my goals yet

2. Because my dogs would wonder were I went

3. Because I am now living in my dream city

4. Because I am attending my dream school

5. Since I have become friends with some of the greatest people in the world

6. Because There are more amazing people in the world that I haven't met yet

7. Because I still have books to read

8. I haven't traveled to Australia yet

9. My body isn't covered in tattoos yet

10. Because I haven't been snorkeling

11. Or skydiving

12. Because I haven't bought those cute pair of shoes from Charlotte Russe yet

13. So I can write these articles and hopefully make a difference

I keep living because there is more to life than hard times. The bad times end and the good times will prosper. Suicide ends your chances to experience the happy moments and the love filled moments. Love will always find a way to shine through so keep living. Comment and let me know your reasons for living.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
