The Woes of Turning 20

21's ugly cousin

The Woes of Turning 20

I think it can be agreed that turning 20, though a seemingly important milestone, is actually rather insignificant. Going through the experience of turning 20, is, well, rather boring itself. It has its up, but as any one will tell you, what goes up must come down.

1. The "Up" of truly being an adult now

Okay so legally you are an adult at 18, but let's get real--no one takes you seriously at age 18, or even 19 for that matter. 20 sounds so much more grown up, so much more mature than you were only 2 years ago. You finally get to think about how you're no longer a teenager and can't be yelled at by your mom with another "teen angst" comment.

2. The "Down" of growing up

20. When I realized that was the number of candles that should be placed on top of a cake this year, boy was I scared. This is another year closer to the real world, another step closer to having to pay your taxes and owning a mini-van. Just know, if Peter Pan ever shows up on my window sill, I will gladly take the chance to runaway to Neverland with him.

3. The "Up/Down" of being one year closer to 21

Again, if were being real, 20 is insignificant, especially when only a year away is the age of 21, when you can go to bars with your friends and enjoy a nice cocktail. But 20 is like the ugly cousin. The year may seem so close, but also so very far away. I won't even get started on those who have all their friends turning 21 while they sit at home, peeved at the year 20.

20 is the start to the greatest decade of your life, at least that is what I've been told. So 20, don't let me down, I've already got mixed feelings about you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
