The Upside Of Going To A Different School Than Your Best Friend

I still remember the day I left my best friend for college like it was yesterday, mostly because all I did was cry. Moving away from the person that is your other half is one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do, especially because you are so used to seeing them every single day. Yet, after surviving a whole semester apart I've learned that there are some positives to being separated from your best friend...

1. Without them by your side, you're forced to branch out and make new friends

There's no telling if you would have joined that club, talked to that person, or tried out for that team if they had been around. Standing in the corner at parties talking to yourselves was no longer an option. In a way, being without them made you a more adventurous and social person. Being away from them resulted in you having the love of your best friend and so many other new friends.

2. Their school friends become your friends and vice versa

The amount of people you know and are friends with at your best friend's school is almost equal to the amount of friends you have at your own school. You get excited not only at the thought of visiting them, but at seeing their other friends there. Your crew just got a little bit bigger!

3. You always have someone who will give you an unbiased opinion

You could always count on your friend for their opinion. Now, however, they aren't biased by knowing all the people you tell them about. Instead, they are able to examine your experiences with a fresh set of eyes and tell you when you're exactly right or completely wrong.

4. Bad days are instantly improved by a call/text from your other half

It's tough being separated, and even tougher when things just aren't going right. Yet, things instantly improve when you get to talk to them. That test you failed doesn't seem so bad anymore. That person that broke your heart doesn't seem as special. They know just what to say to make your bad mood vanish.

5. Your time apart makes your reunions so much better

Sure, you talk every day and like each other's Instagram photos, but nothing compares to seeing them in person. All the weeks apart are worth it the second you set eyes on them and run into each others arms. You're soon reminded they will always be your person when they make you laugh and get your inside jokes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
