The UNF Guide To Rush Week

With fall semester quickly approaching, so is Rush Week! Rush Week is probably the most tiring, exciting, stressful, yet, motivating week I have experienced as a college student. So you've probably done a little bit - okay, maybe a lot, of online shopping to find that perfect dress and heel combination and you've probably made a couple decisions regarding which sorority you "just have to be in." Well, before you go through the grueling process, there are 10 essential tips you need to know.

1. Bring mints.

I repeat: bring mints. You're gonna be up close and personal with women discussing anything and everything from high school athletics to future career goals. Make sure your breath isn't rank. You'll be much more confident going in knowing your breath is minty fresh.

2. Follow the three Bs.

No booze, no boys, no Bush. While in the recruitment rooms, try to refrain from talking about excessive partying, boyfriends and politics. Chapters are looking for distinguished young women and future chapter leaders - they don't need to know you kill it at flip cup or beer pong. Also, I love a good romance story but joining a sorority should be a decision you make for yourself; we want to hear about you and your accomplishments, not you and your boyfriend's anniversary-share that with us at sisterhood retreat! Politics are a sticky conversation-just avoid it.

3. Be yourself.

Don't pretend to be what you think a particular chapter wants. You'll find your true home if you're honest and completely yourself. But don't be afraid to talk yourself up a little bit! Share with us your accomplishments!

4. Don't let what Fraternity men have to say about a chapter influence you.

They don't know the rituals - even though plenty of them claim to. They don't know or understand the bond a chapter has so they can't be the ones to judge. Besides they're not the ones rushing. YOU ARE.

5. Pack some snacks or bring money for snacks.

This is obvious. We're girls. We like food. Who are we kidding, we LOVE food.

6. Don't get down on yourself.

If a sorority drops you, its their loss. Look at it as one less heart-wrenching decision and one less hour of wearing heels and pretending your as graceful as a ballerina in. Trust the system

7.Get to know your Recruitment Counselors.

Shout out to Taylr and Aly! Y'all were the best RC's ever (incase you're reading this). RC's are completely unbiased. Don't trash a chapter when speaking with them but feel comfortable expressing your concern about any particular one. Its their goal to see you happy and to see you in your home.

8. THIS IS MAJOR SO TAKE NOTE.

Take your makeup off every night. I am so serious. Between the stress and junk food you'll more than likely consume this week, don't risk a breakout because you don't feel like washing your face. We both know if you wake up with a pimple the size of saturn on your nose you're gonna be grumpy and self-conscious. Lather, rinse, repeat, ladies.

9. Don't forget to remind your parents or boyfriend (or girlfriend) you won't have your phone all day.

We don't want any worried moms showing up looking for their "kidnaped daughter." Although, that would be pretty funny.

10. If you get a bid from a chapter you didn't want still go to their bid day.

You never know if you never try, right? They could totally surprise you and prove that your home is with them.

Happy rushing and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
