I’m only 18 and I began to live on my own in February. I got two jobs and finally saved up enough for an apartment. The excitement I felt was amazing and people telling me how proud they were of me felt good, too. However, there are things that people don’t tell you about living on your own at such a young age. And no, I’m not talking about paying my bills because shockingly with the right budgeting that hasn't been a problem for me.
I am talking about how two jobs, one full-time and the other part-time can literally drain the life out of you. You'll want to make plans with some friends, but in the long run, you will just end up napping because of how exhausted you are. I am talking about how on your day off you have so much stuff to do that you don't have time to do anything for yourself. Forget about partying, hanging out with friends, or visiting family. You have 50 things to do and only 15 hours to get it all done before you're back to your everyday life: wake up, work, go home to take a nap, and then back to work again.
Now, most of you are probably thinking "I will be able to have tons of parties with people at my own place and be able to to whatever I want." But no, that's not true at all. Either the people you want to hangout with will be too busy or blow you off, you'll fall asleep as I said before, or my all time favorite: you'll get called into work! And that means it's time to cancel all your plans, because if you don't, you won't make enough money, and if you don't make enough money, you can't pay your bills.
So, the full truth about living on your own at 18 isn't that you will have the best time of your life, I mean unless you're that 1 in a million. It's that your social life will almost be gone and your close friends are probably your co-workers; which isn't bad all the time because I love mine. the only person you will have time for is your boyfriend and that's only if you make him spend 99% of his time at your house alone until you get home from work. And well, to be honest, when you get home you're so tired you fall asleep right after you eat dinner or you're so exhausted you forget to eat all together.
So, the main point is, don't go rushing into adulthood. You're still a kid even though you're 18 and you should live life to the fullest. Living on your own isn't at all what you think it would be like.
