Holidays are fun, especially for Americans. I think we are pretty much known for throwing the best parties and get togethers, especially in the South! As Memorial Day approaches us, I can't help but think about everyone who is so excited to get to the lake or beach and hang out with their friends and family. That really is great and all, but are we thinking of the real meaning for this long weekend? And are we excited for this day off of work for all the wrong reasons?

I know that Memorial Day is basically known as the unofficial start of summer. But it was simply created to honor Americans who died fighting for their country. What a lot of people do not realize is Memorial Day was originally honored to those who lost their lives while fighting in the Civil War. But this changed after World War 1 and is now dedicated to celebrate the lives of American military personnel who died in all wars. It is basically a tradition to throw parties on this type of holiday, but we need to also think of those in mourning of their lost family member, or the little babies that will grow up with no mother/father. I can think of so many things that this day represents: liberty, home, faith, vision, leadership, patriotism, peace, democracy, integrity, courage, justice, united we stand, and prosperity.

So on Memorial Day when you are laying in the sun or at a huge lake party, put down the drink and take a minute to observe in your own way a moment of remembrance and respect. Keep all of the brave soldiers that have fallen in the line of duty in your hearts and know that they are heroes in Heaven now. We will always remember their unselfish sacrifice.
