For those of us who attended an all-girls high school, going to college is an adjustment, to say the very least. Here’s a list of the difficult transitions:
1. Gone are the days of being able to roll out of bed and go to school.
Now the hair and makeup has to be done. A perfect all-girls school member is expected to have mastered the messy bun. That hairstyle doesn’t cut it anymore. Say hello to flat irons and curling wands.
2. You would kill to be able to wear your uniform again.
All through high school, you complained about your skirt and polo, but now, your life consists of picking out a countless number of outfits because you can’t wear the same thing every day anymore. (My closet consists of high school T-shirts and running shorts, am I right?)
3. Patterned socks and Sperrys are history.
You will be shunned if you wear socks with Sperrys in public.
4. What's the first thing you notice when you walk into a classroom?
Boys. Those good old days when you would have a crush on a boy and would gossip with your friends in school — nope, now you have to act like a normal, civilized person in school.
5. Teacher-student relationships are non-existent.
You have to come to terms with the fact that your teachers don't care about your life and you shouldn't care about theirs. (Even though I'm pretty sure we are all still friends with our high school teachers on Facebook and know everything about them.)
6. No one feeds you at all hours of the school day.
The best days in school were when your teacher would have a “party.” The party was an excuse to eat in class. We know how to eat. We were constantly being fed at school. Now we feel like we're starving from the lack of food in college classrooms.
7. Not every face is familiar.
Remember how you knew every single person in your grade and quite possibly your school? Now you’re lucky if you know 5 percent of your school. That bond that you cherished in high school does not exist in college, so you think fondly of your glory days.
8. “Unladylike” habits are now actually considered unladylike.
It is no longer acceptable to yell out “does anyone have a tampon?” You have to behave like a civilized person. There are no class clowns. People pay so much money for school that they don’t put up with that. Even though I’m sure we all remember our school’s class clown and laugh at the things she did.
If I had a chance to do high school all over again, I would still choose to go to an all-girls school. Even though there were a lot of lessons to learn after high school, my school built me into the independent woman I am today. I do not think I would be the same if I had gone anywhere else.
