Teachers tell you for four years that once you get to college, you are all alone. They tell you that if you miss a class, the teachers do not care. They tell you that your first year is your hardest year because you are making new friends and you are trying to get into the rush of things. They tell you that your roommate is going to be your best friend and that they are going to help you through college. They were not all the way wrong. Some teachers do care about if you miss their class. They will not hound you about the work you missed, but they will let you know that you missed their class and how important that class was. And just so you know, EVERY class is important. Getting into the rush of things at Ferrum was not too hard for me. It was fast pace at my high school, so the college fast life didn’t stress me out too bad. My teachers were definitely wrong about the roommate situation though. Having a roommate is hard because you are living with someone you have never met before. You may talk over the phone or over text message, but a person can act completely different when they are not right in front of your face. My roommate was not a terrible human being, we just did not get along. We disagreed on too many things, which is fine. Everyone is not going to get along.
Making friends was not too hard for me. I met my best friend like the third week of school, just because I was trying to avoid sitting with my roommate. Which also helped me meet my boyfriend, but that is not too important. Once I met my best friend, making friends came easier because flocked around her like fishermen around a lake. I am not saying that transitioning into college is terrible or that it sucks the soul out of your body. I am also not saying that it is overly hard. It has its moments when you are just absolutely exhausted and you want to cry to your mom, but it also has its moments when you are so happy that you came. Although my high school teachers tried to scare me, I have overcome my freshman year with only a few minor battle wounds.
