We all love to study, don't we? Well, maybe not, but these six places make it a lot more bearable and sometimes even enjoyable. Completing work in your school library and studying hours for exams can be extremely boring and unpleasant, right? Well, not at UMass because, well, there are plenty of other awesome places to crack open your books and get to work.
Here is a short list of places on campus where I enjoy spending time when I need to get some work done or places that my friends have mentioned are great places to go.
1. W.E.B. DuBois Library
This one's obvious. Who doesn't love to study in this 28 story colossal beauty. As the second tallest library in the world, how could you resist the urge to ride the elevator or, if you're feeling energetic, walking up all the way up to one of the top floors to catch one of the many amazing views of campus? My favorite thing to do is find a spot on the twenty-first floor in a cubicle, right next to the window, which overlooks the pond. In autumn, the scenery is incredible. Simply, no picture can do it justice. The changing colors of the leaves from a distance up above is a sight worth seeing.
2. Furcolo School of Education
Not many people can recognize this place, unless they are Education majors. Why? Well because it's brand new. Over the summer, Furcolo received a much needed "facelift". The new and improved, modernized building is simply awesome. It looks like ILC inside and it's a great place to hang out with my other teacher classmates, to study, and discuss our homework (lesson plans). With a café in the works and some new and improved technology still to come, Furcolo is going to be the place to be.
3. Isenberg School of Management Atrium
This small, but popular study section of the business school is a great place for students to spend a few hours. Despite being the primary home to the many business majors at UMass, I know that they are willing to share the large seating area with many tables, and as you can see, and a great big view of campus from the windows. In close proximity to the dorms, class building, and the library, students often flock here as an alternative.
4. W.E.B Dubois Library's Outdoor Learning Commons
The outdoor commons in the basement of the library is one of the coolest places to get work done or even just to hang out with a friend. Without being inside the actual library, you can still get your work done, and enjoy the short span of beautiful weather that MA has to offer all while getting an awesome view of the old chapel, and the 28 stories of the library that shoot up into the sky above you like a sky scraper.
5. Roots Café/ The Commonwealth Honors College
As a transfer student, one of the first things I heard about our campus was how great the food is. With that in mind, I quickly came to know what/where The Roots Cafe was. Although the food at Roots is off the charts, it is also a perfect place to sit down and study. Located next to the Recreation Center (the gym) and within the Honors College, there are both indoor and outdoor seating areas where students can grab a bite to eat, sit down and chat with friends, or focus to complete some homework. There are also concrete stairs around the area where students often sit to soak up the sun.
Personally, I go to Roots to grab food on the go because it is so convenient and tastes so good. Many of my friends say that they enjoy studying there as a change of scenery from being up at the library. Based on all of the great things that students say about Roots, perhaps I should spend some more time there before my time at UMass is up.
6. The Campus Pond
Last but definitely not least. Hands down the most serene place on our campus is the pond. Although many students gather around, there is something peaceful about watching the water glisten in the sunshine from anywhere you look. The pond lies at almost the center of campus, which is ideal because its beauty can be enjoyed by all, even from the students in the library looking out the from the window. Even in the winter when the pond is solid ice, its charm somehow still remains. Although, the pond is pretty in the winter time too, I'd prefer to study outside on this tree stump watching the ducks swim by. I know that I'll be longing all winter to jump inside this photo to warm weather by the pond.
