As the new school year approaches us, we hear the dreaded word moving over and over again. Even the college send you letters helping you with packing, telling you move in days and telling you the prohibited items (i.e. candles). Yes, moving into your new college dorm or apartment is one of the biggest hassles anyone will ever have to experience especially if your like me and have to move 12 hours away and back every year. I have learned my lesson in how to successfully move while making many mistakes on the way. Here are the top tips for moving into college.
1. When bringing things on hangers, do not take the clothing off the hanger.
It is a huge hassle and waste of time to take things off the hanger when packing and then back on when you move in. If you simply wrap a rubber band around the top of a group of hangers, then they stay together and are easier to carry. To keep your clothes clean while traveling, grab a garbage bag and open it. Put the side that opens toward the floor and cut a hole in the top small enough for just the top of the hangers to slip through. Now you have an easy way to carry them and the clothes are protected from the elements
2. If you move more than once (switching dorms) in a time span, then hire movers (or bribe friends) just to help you carry the stuff.
I moved three times in three months and I can say after the first time, you never want to do it again, especially the parents. So as I prepared to move for the third time to the bigger dorm, I had no idea how I was going to carry it all, so my mom hired movers. They came in and I was moved out of my dorm in 20 minutes and everything was placed in my new dorm 10 minutes later. It is a more expensive option but in the end it is worth it. It saves you time and a few sore muscles too! The more people there to help you, the less time it takes.
3. You will not need half the things you think you do, so think about what you will really need.
When I went to college my freshman year, I thought I would need so much stuff. When the end of the year came around, I realized I didn’t use half of what I brought in the car or I could have just bought it down there. You also accumulate so much stuff during the year finding a way to move things home will be the death of you. You do not need that seventh pair of jeans or that fifth pair of heels at all! Remember, the dorms are not huge. So you have to think about the amount of room you’ll have. Decorations are important, a mini fridge is important, the 10th pair of shoes that look like the three others you own is not.
So good luck packing and moving in. It may not be all that fun, but it is part of the experience.
