It seems that in today's society, cell phones are everything. They are everywhere you go and if you don't own a smart phone, it seems that you are left out of the loop. But one day, I accidentally left my phone at home and it was possibly the most rewarding experience I have ever had.
I had woken up late that day and was rushing to get ready. I had to stay on campus all day and I didn't want to forget anything. I realized I didn't have my phone when I had reached the bus stop.
Should I run back and risk being late to class? Or should I just leave my phone at home?
At this point the shuttle was rounding the corner and I knew I was about to suffer through the day without a phone. Or so I thought.
Hour one, of forgetting my phone I was upset because all my classmates were checking social media and texting all of their friends. Why couldn't that be me? Why did I have to sleep past my alarm?
Hour two, I ran into one of my good friends and we had a whole conversation without a buzz or tweet to interrupt us. Let me tell you something, having a real conversation, a non-interrupted conversation is the strangest, yet coolest thing ever. This is what it must have felt like when our parents grew up! How sad? It really is sad that I had to forget my phone at home to realize that my friend is more than a tweet or a text.
Around lunch time I caught up with my roommates and we all sat there. My roommates were checking their phones and I realized then how obsessed our society is with our technology. Seriously though, why have we let these tiny devices take over our lives? Without a phone in my hand to keep me from looking up I realized just how truly beautiful my campus was. Sure I had always known that my school was pretty but I had never looked around long enough to notice the little things. I can't believe that I have never looked up before.
I challenge you to leave your phone at home one day, I promise you wont regret it, I know I didn't. Leaving my phone at home challenged me to *gasp* talk to people in person, look around and take in my surroundings and it was a damn good time.
