The Things No One Tells You When You Go to College
Flow Journal

Going into college, no one really knows what to expect. Sure, you've heard lots of stories, but everyone's experience is different. Some things are harder for some people than others, and that's OK. You'll make friends in college who will make your great days even better, and most importantly, you'll make friends in college who will make the really bad days a little more bearable. So, here's what I've learned in college so far...

1. If you haven't already, you will have a mental breakdown from stress/homework eventually.

A big difference between high school and college is that it really is up to you how you spend your time - not your parents, not your professors, but you! You have to make the effort and learn to manage your time wisely.

2. You will be homesick at some point.

Just call your mom - it'll be all right.

3. You will be OK without your parents.

You'll learn to do laundry like a champ at midnight...

4. It's OK to have fun in college.

But don't go out drinking every night. Grades in college do matter!

5. You do NOT have to drink if you don't want to.

Just as many people don't drink alcohol as those who do.

6. You will probably question if you're at the right school at some point.

I myself have wondered if I went to the right school a couple of times, but you'll remember why you chose your dream school in the first place.

7. It's OK to be an undeclared major.

This is especially true for the first year of college, at least. Most people land a job that isn't related to their major anyways.

8. Don't sit in your dorm room all the time doing work.

Go out with your friends and make memories to last you a lifetime.

9. Once again, grades do matter!

Messing around and not doing your work could come between you and your diploma if you're not vigilant.

10. If you're in a relationship, do not feel obligated to end it just because you're about to go to college.

If both of you are willing to make the effort, then the two of you will be just fine!

11. Most importantly, though, don't lose yourself.

Yes, college will change you (some for the good, some not so much), but you shouldn't throw away your morals, values, or personality in this new environment you're being exposed to. Surround yourself with people that push you to be a better person and have goals after college.

12. Always use the buddy system!

Take someone with you everywhere you go, especially if it's night time! It's much safer and that's what is important.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
