I'm not sure about a lot of other towns, but mine is very over the top.
This means that when you commit to college your friends throw you a huge party or they come over and decorate your room in all things YOUR college. You make sure to post it on Instagram, Facebook, VSCO, and anything else that will get the word out that you are going to "THE BEST SCHOOL."
I feel as though school is a very loosely used word when it comes to actually being a senior or junior and choosing one. You're choosing the campus, and so much of the time you just think that you have a major in mind meanwhile it might change 4 or 5 times throughout your career.
In my town, for the most part, it is all about the name, and at least for me I didn't think of the profound distance and amount of adjusting that name would come with. And quite honestly it wasn't talked about so how was I supposed to know.
So, here are 4 things no one seems to mention about going away to college:
1. The feeling when you are watching your family drive away.
I understand this isn't a big deal for everyone, and honestly, a lot of the time people are fine with saying goodbye to their parents and going and getting drunk their first night of college. But I know someone out there is reading this and is going "damn, that is going to suck."
My parents did an incredible job of giving me the best childhood and the best home life I could have ever asked for, and part of my personality that I didn't even know was apart of me shined through when they drove away. I love my home, and I was so comfortable in my ways.
Being dropped off and being left alone, as much as I thought I was ready... I wasn't.
And the months of adjusting and working hard to be okay after that was long and hard and still aren't over. Know you aren't alone. Someone else is feeling the exact same way, even if everyone seems to be acting perfectly fine.
2. The way you'll miss homecooked meals.
Maybe it isn't so bad for everyone depending on the school. And honestly, my school's food is not bad in the slightest, to most people. However coming from a place with some of the best food in the country and having a mom and grandma who are incredible cooks, it was definitely an adjustment. Enjoy all the homecooked meals you can now.
3. How it feels like a never-ending sleepover.
I stroll around my freshman commons and halls where about 7,000 freshmen live. It is mind-blowing that on a Tuesday night we're all here doing our work studying to get good grades and all going back and sleeping in the same places. It doesn't seem weird until you're here, yet it is the most fun all at the same time. Never having to leave your friends and always having 4-5 closets to pick outfits from comes in handy.
4. The importance of the friends you will make.
When everyone is in the same boat, it does something to a group of people. You become closer quicker, you figure out what you like and don't like about people, and you hold on to the ones who make you happy. (Shoutout to you guys you know who you are). Thank you for the ones that I have from home and will have forever, and thank you to the ones that make adjusting to college a little bit easier each and every day.
There are many changes, and it will take time. Trust the process and stay strong!
