The Things My Mother Has Taught Me

13 Thing's I've Learned From My Mom

1
The Things My Mother Has Taught Me

To girls, our mom's are our first teachers, superhero's and best friends. Although we may not seem like we are taking in all of our mothers lessons when they are taught to us, we cherish every word of advice they gave us to get us through the hardest of times. From advising us in the fourth grade to not brush our curly hair, to holding us when we cried in middle school about how mean girls could be, and helping us pack our things up when it was time to leave for college...she was our one constant.

1. Smile

Even on the worst of days, just smile. Things could always be worse. Simply smiling will make all the difference.

2. Trust Your Heart

Your brain will tell you a lot of things. It will tell you the logical thing to do and most people will tell you to do that thing... but sometimes that's just not what is right for you. Occasionally you need to ignore your head and listen to your heart.

3. He's Not Worth It

No boy is worth your tears. No boy is worth making you feel unworthy. If it doesn't feel right, it's not right. He is not worth your time and you deserve better.

4. But Sometimes He Is

If you still get butterflies at the sound of his name, and if you still smile and laugh constantly, go for it. Sometimes it still won't work out...and that's okay, but you live and you learn and don't regret being with someone just because it wasn't perfect.

5. You Don't Need All That Makeup

I know all of your friends are doing it, and you feel weird walking around with a bare face, but you don't need it.. I promise you. Anyone who is worth being in your life will not just be in it for the amount of foundation you have on, or how sharp your eyebrows look.

6. There Are No Hand-Out's

Life is good most of the time, but don't expect things to be handed to you. Anyone who is good for anything was not handed everything they have without working for it. You must work hard for what you get, or don't expect anything at all.

7. The Laundry Won't Do Itself

I know you think that once the pile gets high enough, it will just go away, but no...this is not how it works. I know it's a pain and it's easier for people to just do it for you, but it's the best life lesson out there; take responsibility.

8. Respect Other Girls

In the end, girls have to stick together. We all deal with most of the same issues. It's silly to not have each others backs. You never know what someone else is going through, and having girls around that treat you like family and give you a shoulder to cry on is the best feeling in the world.

9. The World Owe's You Nothing

Just because you've gone through a few hard times doesn't mean the rest of your life will be easy. Life is hard sometimes, but it's the tough situations that make you stronger. Don't expect every bad thing that happens to even out with something good. Thats's just not the way the world works.

10. Forgive but Never Forget

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me". It's okay to be hurt, and it's okay to make mistakes. Everyone does things they regret sometimes. It's perfectly alright to forgive someone for making a mistake, but it must take a lot more than "I'm sorry" to gain back your full trust.

11. Mom's Will See it Before Anyone Else Can

Mom's know... they can tell the good boys from the bad, and the fake friends from the real. They may not always warn you, but they know. Mom's know best, it's just the way this world has turned out to work. Keep your mom's comments in the back of your mind.

12. Admit Your Mistakes

We're all human. We mess up sometimes. Don't be too stubborn to admit that.

13. Believe in Something

You don't have to believe in God. You don't have to believe in a higher power, or in karma, or in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny...but believe in something. Even if it's just in yourself. It's okay to put up walls, but make them out of sand, not brick.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
