It was a big day for "Rick and Morty" fans; the day that McDonald’s would finally bring back their Szechuan dipping sauce for one day.
Szechuan sauce was available for a limited time only in 1998 to promote the upcoming Disney film, Mulan. The sauce was purely promotional and stopped being marketed once the movie lost its publicity rise. However, the creators of "Rick and Morty," Dan Harmon and Justin Roilan, wrote an episode that featured the show's main character, Rick, trying to regain the promotional sauce once more.
This ultimately gave the sauce so much publicity that McDonald’s agreed that on October 7th, they would release the sauce once more, for just one day at select McDonald’s restaurants. However, they did not mention that the sauces would only be given to the first 110 people at each venue, and therefore, the promotional event proved to be a disaster.
Cops were forced to regulate many of the venues, and break up fights between customers as some people decided to become physical over the dipping sauce. McDonald’s had not been prepared for the high demand on the item, leaving many of the locations in complete havoc and chaos.
Apart from what was going on at the venues, the sauces became extremely rare and were being sold online within sites such as eBay for as much as $500. A high price, it seems, but the sauces sold immediately. In one case specifically, Rachel Marie, a woman from Michigan, was actually able to trade her Szechuan Sauce singular packet for a 2004 Volkswagen GTI. Needless to say, there was nothing that some of the fans would not do to obtain this limited time offer.
After the day of complete chaos, McDonald’s apologized to the public for its wrongful approach and underestimated attack on the dipping phenomenon, and promised that sometime this winter Szechuan sauce would be back for good. An offer this extended was completely out-of-this-world for Rick and Morty fans, as they now wait patiently for the hopefully more stocked up sauce offer.
