The Struggles Of Being A Devout Indie Music Lover

I'll be the first to say it: indieheads have developed a laughable reputation. We're mocked for taking our relationship with music so seriously, our stigma of elitism, worshipping Radiohead and Neutral Milk Hotel... performing unplugged concerts in extra quaint places and recording it to look candid... Aside from that, followers of indie music have real-life trials and tribulations when all we want to do is listen to some music. Here's what sucks about liking indie music.

Not being able to find that one band on Spotify, YouTube, or even Google because they barely exist

I'M A MILLENNIAL AND I'M NOT USED TO NOT FINDING WHAT MUSIC I WANT TO LISTEN TO AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO COPE WITH THE FACT THAT I MAY NEVER FIND IT.

Never being able to participate in pop music sing-a-longs

I have no clue what this song is so I'm just going to sit and wait awkwardly until everyone is finished with their impromptu performance: high school for me in one sentence.

Having no one to geek out with over your favorite band

THEY HAVE A NEW ALBUM COMING OUT AND I'M SO EXCITED BUT NO ONE CARES.

When you do find that one person who likes your favorite band, it's like hitting the lottery

I think of this gif literally every time it happens to me.

Then it turns out they're only casual fans and they only know two songs.

Paying an obscene amount of money for that one rare album

There were only 20 copies made ever, but it's the only one I don't have: I NEED IT.

Figuring out how to react to the hipster jokes

Am I offended or flattered? I should probably be offended... I guess I'll just laugh along.

Pitchfork putting really awesome albums on blast with them low af scores

The review: 80% background context for the band, 10% info on their side projects, 5% some irrelevant scandal, 5% describing the music in ridiculously subjective, vague language that barely describes the music at all.

Accepting the fact that Anthony Fantano will never know who you are despite feeling so much broship with him

He rated one of my favorite albums of all time a 9. A NINE. It's obvious we were meant to be best friends.

Dealing with the elitists who brutally trash music they don't like just to sound superior

We don't want to hear about how much you despise Miley Cyrus for the 50th time. Can we just talk about what we do like instead?

That one vinyl guy with an attitude who just happens to run one of the best record stores in your area

I'm just trying to support your business man, don't get all salty when I ask you for help finding something because your bins are all packed to the max capacity.

The fact that music taste is way more important than you wish it were when considering dating someone

How could we bond if they don't care about the music I like?

But I guess the plus side is... we don't have to worry about 100 dollar tickets to shows selling out within 5 minutes?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
