We have all experienced that moment when the power goes out but you still try to flip the light switch on, or you stand and stare into the open fridge, or you try to turn on the TV. It's almost crippling to be without power in this day and age. (Granted, it could be a lot worse.)
But inevitably there are seven stages everyone experiences during an outage (especially college students).
1. Board & Card Games by Candlelight (Hour 1)
The first few hours are exciting! It's like the olden days before smartphones and social media. You grab some friends and family and play a few rounds of spoons, laugh, and have a good time.
2. Boredom & Dying Phones (Hour 2-4)
Games are fun, but after an hour you're ready for something else, like scrolling through you Insta or checking twitter. But your phone is on 15% and fading fast. Not to mention the WiFi is down.
Boredom sets in and nothing sounds appealing, so staring at the wall it is.
3. Complain (Hour 4-6)
Hours of staring at the wall have done nothing to entertain you. All you want is to check Facebook and watch some Netflix, but you can't. So you do the only thing that you can: complain.
A few typical remarks being:
"It's like we're in the stone age."
"When will the power be back?! I'm sooooooo bored!"
"What am I supposed to do without my phonnneee?!"
4. Seek out electricity (Hour 7-10)
That's it. You can't take it anymore so you go out "for food." The restaurant has power, so you charge your phone and just sit and bask in the glory that is electricity.
After a few hours of sitting in the same booth, the waitress comes over for the umpteenth time and asks if you want anything else. You catch the hint and retreat back to the powerless void that is home.
5. Give up (Hour 11-14)
Sitting in darkness, you give up. No use resisting the powerless life-- I mean after all the Amish live with it (somehow). The power probably will never come back on so you better start churning your own butter and knitting your own clothes.
6. Contemplate the Deeper Things in Life (Hour 15)
Without power, it's a whole new world out there. You start to notice the power lines, and you begin wondering about other things you overlook in your day-to-day life.
From that, you begin to wonder why cars are called cars? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop? Who invented the refrigerator? Why is a stop sign red?
Then frustration sinks in again because you can't Google the answers!
7. Power Comes Back!
Power comes back on... or you just repeat the cycle until it does. At first, you're excited and using as much electricity as you can to make up for lost time. Then you remember how the electricity let you down and you resentfully charge your phone and try to repress the last few hours.
