The Mysterious Stages Of Girls' Night In

An inside look at what goes on when we all get together for a night without boys.

The Mysterious Stages Of Girls' Night In
  1. Talking about your days. It is important to fill each other in about all the horrifyingly embarrassing/ awkward things you did during the day. Some (real) examples include: tripping on the stairs going to class, awkwardly running into the person who gave you a fake number at a party last night, bumping into the person you never texted back, realizing your zipper was down in the dining hall, making eye contact with someone through the crack in the stall door, dropping your phone down the elevator shaft, etc. You get the point. The best part is we are all equally embarrassing, which is why we’re friends.
  2. Objectively filling everyone in on the current boy situations. Usually we start with the rock solid steady relationships, just checking to make sure everything is still going smoothly. Then moving onto the boys who are coming on strong, and their intentions are clearly bad news. Don’t worry, we know all your tricks and aren’t going to let you play our girl. Next up are the crushes. If it’s a new crush, we kind of submit his profile to the group for approval. This includes pictures, his best qualities, his occupation, etc. If it’s an established crush, we update on any interactions that have occurred since the last girls’ night. At this point in the night, there isn’t a whole lot of dramatic emotion attached to this issue. This stage is purely informative.
  3. OH MY GOSH. LOOK WHO LIKED MY INSTAGRAM.
  4. Breaking out the food. At this point, we only eat a little bit and then put it away because we have superb self-control.
  5. Dancing on the couch and singing at the top of our lungs. A huge part of girls’ night is catharsis. In this sense, pretty much anything goes and we encourage forgetting the outside world while wildly flailing around like idiots. We usually do this until we’re all out of breath and collapse in a fit of laughter.
  6. Stalking Instagram and Facebook pages. If you’re a fellow female, you know how far this can go. If you’re a male, you might be frightened. So I’ll spare everyone and just move on to the next stage.
  7. Complaining about the male species, especially the boys who are terribly slow at texting back. The dramatic flood gates have opened. In regards to messaging, we all brainstorm logical possibilities for why they have not replied. Maybe a squirrel stole his phone and is holding it hostage in a tree. Maybe he got attacked by a goose and is in the hospital. Maybe he spilled hexachlorocyclopentadiene on his phone in chemistry lab. For some reason, we always give him the benefit of the doubt. This is no time for being realistic.
  8. Breaking out the food, ROUND 2. By this time, we all have made a pact to work out in the morning, so we feel justified in finishing the entire box of CheezeIts. And the whole bag of Doritos. And the whole package of Oreos. Now that I think about it, we’re pretty darn impressive.
  9. Laying on the floor, listening to music, completely content with no one talking. We’ve laughed, we’ve vented, and we’ve de-stressed. It’s time to just chill out and enjoy each other’s presence. This stage is golden.
  10. Getting mushy. This is usually the last stage and can last for 30 minutes or 3 hours. We talk about life, the future, our faith, our families, our fears, our dreams… everything. We talk about how we’re going to look back on college and remember being sprawled around a unairconditioned dorm room with the girls who will be in our lives forever. Thus another girls’ night has come to a close, and we can’t wait to do it all over again.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
