I own a lot of makeup. That is a definite truth. I’ve racked up points at Sephora and my bathroom counter is usually overflowing with a varied selection of products. That being said, I don’t wear makeup on daily bases; I usually shuffle my way to class with an uncovered face. High school had been much of the same; no makeup to be seen unless it was a special occasion. My love for makeup didn’t really start 'til senior year, when I needed to do my own makeup for prom. Ever since, I started to pay attention to what I was buying, and using my love has been an upward journey with a few slight setbacks.
If you, like me, were once new to the makeup game, then you also experience the ups and downs of getting into wearing makeup.
You’ve probably bought the wrong shade of foundation/eye shadow/lipstick/etc.
I once went to the Mac store to buy a foundation and loved what I chose at the store, only to realize once I got home that my face was practically yellow. It’s a plight that happens to us all, and no matter how many swatches we try on our hands, we end up with a distinctly "off" shade.
Which is why I seek the advice of Sephora employees.
You’ve tired to watch a makeup tutorial and failed.
They all make it look so easy on YouTube. Watching Michelle Phan do makeup is mesmerizing, but trying to copy it is difficult. You never have the right products. Or, no matter how many times you watch that video, you can still never get your makeup to look like that.
You’ve tried to contour and failed.
The Kardashians have made us contour-obsessed. And why shouldn’t we be? Contouring is great, but it’s still somewhat difficult for a first timer. It can be defeating to blend and blend and blend, only to have an obvious bronzer line around your forehead.
You get bold and shy.
Finding your every day products are great, but after that, then you can start to get bold. You might try a bright lipstick and or a darker eye shadow. There’s the stage where no matter how great you think you look, you still get a little stage fright stepping out into world with ruby red lips. Eventually, though, you get past it and start to enjoy the attention your bold look brings.
You learn that practice makes perfect.
Finally finding the right products and techniques for your face is amazing. You know you’ve finally found what makes you face look A+. There’s nothing like the confidence that you look great. You’ll have found your perfect shade of everything and perfect product. There’s nothing like showing the world the artistic skills you have with a few brushes.
You can appreciate your skin with or without makeup.
Putting on a full face every day is exhausting, and so, the days you go without allow you to better appreciate your natural look. Makeup is a wonderful invention, but you can still look great with or without it. When I’m wearing it, I love it. But when I’m without, I take time to love my natural features.
