"The Sims" is an EA (Electronic Arts) game that started in the early 2,000’s. Many players have been faithful to the many versions throughout the years. As we watched this game that was originally supposed to be called "Doll House" grow as The Sims with "The Sims" 1, 2, 3, and 4 with the various expansions and packs throughout the years, the basis of the game is to simulate life with people, aliens, and animals that you create, plus other creatures if you have certain expansion packs. Through the years, they have made changes and there are some that work and don’t work well at all.
In "The Sims", it started as a family building game that evolved into being a life building game. In this game, you could party or have a family, or have both if you wanted to. This game style progressed into "The Sims 2." "The Sims 2" made changes with graphics and lifestyle. In this version, we had fears, pregnancy, babies that could actually come out of a crib, and toddlers. These toddlers worked well with the gaming life style and the realistic nature of the game. In this game, babies could be carried, changed on a changing table, and you could play with them, and toddlers could be bathed in a bath tub, while you had to teach them to talk, walk, and use the toilet, or else you’d be in trouble as they grew up. Sadly, as the game developed and grew, "The Sims" made game moves that didn’t work well for players in the game like taking out the need for toddlers to have to learn, the changing tables for babies, and less for the family in "The Sims 3" than "The Sims 2."
During "The Sims 3," the game started to leave out important parts of the family game play with life stages and fears, but they did give memories and laundry, which was useful to everyday sim life. The memories was a fun and important game changer because they had good and bad memories, but the game itself was slow and had the most bugs out of 1, 2, and 3. Despite this game having more bad points than the other two, it added a couple realistic details that are important to game play, like cars, and the color wheel for customizing your sims wardrobe to get different hair coloring or more clothing options to look more like your vision. Sadly, when your sim drove to places, you couldn’t go into the buildings like you could in "The Sims" 1 and 2. People such as LGR (Lazy Game Reviewer) have called these “rabbit holes.” This feature in "The Sims 3" was one of their worst features to put in, but that was soon to change.
Now, we have "The Sims 4." "The Sims 4" was almost like they were completely reverting to "The Sims" at first. They took away toddlers, babies that had more normal functions, memories, and fears. Luckily, they did give us moods and more complex emotions. These emotions can have very big effects on their behavior, and this can be interesting in public when they can go out where you can see them and play them in public. We can all say we are thankful that it’s not “rabbit holes” anymore. The main bad side about "The Sims 4" is that they are taking most of the main aspects that attracted their original audience. Many Sim players love family play and make that a big focus. They did give a stuff pack for kids rooms and games, but it isn’t enough when they amount of party content surpasses the amount of family items and options for the game. They have also made great strides with their diversity that wasn’t in the other games, but they have a lot to do still because "The Sims" is about creating lives for your sims that you’d want. They should be able to have the freedom to party and have a family, or to choose one or the other if they want to. Sadly, the family options are so little that having a baby or kid on the game is now a little boring. There isn’t much to do with them. "The Sims 4" is still a great game with great potential that has been showing more with their current stuff and game packs, but I am hoping for a family expansion pack, seasons, a pet expansion pack, and a couple that include the qualities from "The Sims" 2 and 3 that we hold dear to our hearts as "The Sims" players from the start because freedom to play however you want and do whatever is what "The Sims" is about.
