Welcome to the Sandlerverse, where it's Adam Sandler all the time. This week we will be taking a look at Adam Sandler's 1995 comedy "Billy Madison." For the people that haven't read my last two articles, this is how these reviews work. We will be judging every Adam Sandler movie in three different categories. The story, the comedic value and the side celebrities. Each Category will be rated out of a scale out of ten, ten being the highest. Then we add up those scores and the final score will be rated out of thirty. If everything sounds fine and dandy, let's just see if Billy Madison can pass my tests and get a perfect score.
Let's begin with the story, warning there will be spoilers. If we remember the last article I wrote an equation that also works for this movie. The quirky underdog in this story is Billy Madison, the son of hotel chain owner billionaire, Brian Madison. We soon find out that old Billy hasn't done anything with his life , all he does is get drunk with his friends. We find out at the dinner with the executives of the company that Brian is ready to pass on the company. He thinks that Billy is too immature to run the company so he tries to pass on the company to Eric the bully . Billy tries to tell his father all his achievements in his life . It turns out that his father has cheated his son through all of schooling days. So, Billy brings up the idea of him retaking all the grades in two weeks each and if he can to do it he will be able to take over the company if not it will go to Eric. So, Billy starts his journey through the grades he doesn't hit a snag until the third grade where he falls in love with his teacher. He learns from mistakes and makes friends along the way. From that point on, it's a montage up until freshman year where Billy sees high school isn't what he remembered. He apologizes to people that he has bullied in the past. After everything seems to be going right Eric has to come and screw it up. He Blackmails the principal to say Billy payed him off to pass him. After his dad sees it he calls it off. After getting slapping around by his love, Billy starts to fight back and get the principal to go back and say he lied. After he does Billy calls a one versus one against Eric in an academic decathlon. The score in the final category is tied so they in a quiz bowl type of challenge. Billy question is half assed while Eric gives up and pulls out a gun. He tries to shoot Billy. Billy gets saved by his friends throughout the story. He graduates and gives the company to Carl the executive that cared for him. Billy kisses the girl and credits The script is a nice concept and overall it turned out great.
Next we have the things that make us laugh, the comedic value. The jokes in this, as you can guess, are similar to every other Adam Sandler movies. But in this movie, the jokes didn't really hit the mark. The only part that really made me laugh is the musical number. Which is close to the end of the movie it didn't really resonate it was trying to hit too many audiences with their jokes hopefully his next movie that we review will have a better overall better comedic value than this week.
Lastly we have those actors that help Mr. Sandler in his movies. This week we have two major actors Steve Buschemi, and Chris Farley. Steve Buschemi best known for Monster's inc. plays a Bullied kid that Billy bullied back in his high school days he's also on the brink of killing people. I personally loved Steve's character he was hilarious when he appeared in the last quarter of the movie. He may weird some of you out, but that's for you to decide . Next we have Chris Farley best known for "Tommy Boy" where he plays the bus driver. He hates the kids and is a massive pervert. Chris Farley as usual is hilarious theirs no better person that can play this character. As per usual great job casting crew.
So, did Billy pass my test ? Let's find out for the story, we have a pretty decent concept. Overall, it is just the comedy that hurt it for me but overall the story was great for what it was 9 out of 10. Next we have the Comedic value which this one didn't hit the spot for me I'm giving this category a 4 out of 10. lastly, we have supporting actors which they have done a fantastic job 9 out 10. So, our final score 22 out of 30 which is average at this point so billy passed at least. Next week on the Sandlerverse we will be taking a look at a newer Sandler in "Grown Ups."
